On board with Kilobat

Train Wi-Fi that drops, and a Mac that knows why

Kilobat is a Mac menu-bar app that shows what each app sends and holds back what can wait.

  • The sign-in page. When it doesn’t open by itself, the menu bar says This Wi-Fi wants you to sign in, with Open sign-in page. Turn your VPN on again after you’ve signed in. Free
  • Why it can’t connect. When a VPN, iCloud Private Relay or custom DNS hides the sign-in page, Kilobat names the layer that broke: VPN, DNS or the network. Free
  • See what’s using it. Every app’s upload and download, live in the menu bar, so you know which one is taking the shared link. Free
  • Mark it metered. macOS treats train Wi-Fi as unlimited. Mark it Metered and Kilobat skips its own speed tests; with automatic switching, Travel blocks backups and the like on that network. Pro
  • Send later. A big upload, such as Dropbox syncing a folder, can wait until you’re on unmetered Wi-Fi again, for up to eight hours while Kilobat is open. Pro

Questions

Which trains have free Wi-Fi?

In these guides: Amtrak, free; Avanti West Coast, free; Brightline, free; Deutsche Bahn ICE, free; Eurostar, free; GWR, free; Italo, free; LNER, free; Northern, free; Renfe, free; ScotRail, free; TGV INOUI, free; SWR, free; Southeastern, free; Trenitalia, free; VIA Rail, free. Each guide says how to sign in and what’s limited.

Why does train Wi-Fi drop in tunnels and cuttings?

The train reaches the internet over mobile networks or satellite, so the link drops where they can’t reach it. Avanti, Deutsche Bahn, Eurostar and Southeastern all describe gaps or tunnel coverage in their own pages.

Can I stream on train Wi-Fi?

Often not. GWR, LNER and Amtrak restrict streaming, and ScotRail asks passengers not to. Southeastern caps each device’s daily data. Each guide gives the operator’s own rule.

Why won’t the train Wi-Fi sign-in page open on my Mac?

A VPN, iCloud Private Relay or your own DNS can keep the page from opening. Turn them off, open http://captive.apple.com in Safari, and turn the VPN on again after you’ve signed in. Kilobat shows Open sign-in page when a network is waiting for you.

How do I stop my Mac using up a train’s data cap?

Mark the network Metered in Kilobat and it skips its own speed tests. With Pro, the Travel profile blocks backups and the like on that network, and updaters wait until you’re off it.

Board, sign in, and keep the Wi-Fi for what matters.
