Coverage
Wi-Fi is on all ICE trains, some IC trains and selected regional trains. DB is rolling it out across its whole long-distance fleet.
Intercity trains use the same WIFIonICE network name and login as the ICE.
It works across borders on trips to Austria, Switzerland, France, Belgium and the Netherlands.
DB uses multiprovider technology that uses all available mobile networks along the line in parallel, at up to 300 km/h.
In tunnels, internet only works where mobile operators cover the tunnel. DB says this is partly still unsatisfactory. The on-board ICE Portal keeps working.
The ICE Portal’s Connectivity Radar shows the expected connection on the next stretch, from “Fast internet” to “No internet”.
The rules
DB doesn’t publish a data cap or throttling rule. Speed depends on the mobile networks and how many passengers are online. DB asks you to avoid app and system updates, downloads and high-definition films.
DB says VPN connections are possible in first and second class, and recommends a VPN or https sites. The ICE Portal may not load over a VPN, so turn it off to use the portal.
Tips
Download videos before you travel, or use the ICE Portal, as DB suggests.
Check the Connectivity Radar on the ICE Portal before a video call.

On board with Kilobat
Kilobat is a Mac menu-bar app that shows what each app sends and holds back what can wait. On Deutsche Bahn ICE Wi-Fi on board:
brew install seifip/kilobat/kilobatPro is $29 once for two Macs, with a 7-day free trial and 14-day refunds. More in saving hotspot data.
What is eating your bandwidth? Live traffic for every app, right in your menu bar. Catch the backup choking your call.
Hotspot data gone in an hour? Travel blocks backups, and updaters wait until you’re off the hotspot. The apps keep working.
Yes. It is free in both classes, though first class is set up for heavier use.
No. DB says there is no time limit throughout the journey.

DB says VPN connections are possible in first and second class, and recommends a VPN or https sites. The ICE Portal may not load over a VPN, so turn it off to use the portal.
A VPN, iCloud Private Relay or your own DNS can keep the page from opening. Turn them off, open http://captive.apple.com in Safari, and turn the VPN on again after you’ve signed in. Kilobat shows Open sign-in page when a network is waiting for you.
