Coverage

Where GWR Wi-Fi works, and where it drops

  1. GWR Wi-Fi uses data from the mobile phone network, from Paddington to Penzance and Southampton to Swansea.

  2. GWR says the service depends on a good mobile signal, so it can’t guarantee full service all the time.

  3. There will be interruptions in tunnels, cuttings and other places that block mobile signals.

  4. Icomera provides the Wi-Fi on class 150, 158, 175, 230 and 387 trains.

  5. Nomad provides it on the 80x and 16x fleets and on the Sleeper.

  6. Because the Wi-Fi is on the trains, you may pick it up near a GWR train, such as in a station.

On board with Kilobat

Make a shared train link go further

Kilobat is a Mac menu-bar app that shows what each app sends and holds back what can wait. On GWR Wi-Fi on board:

  • The sign-in page. When it doesn’t open by itself, the menu bar says This Wi-Fi wants you to sign in, with Open sign-in page. Turn your VPN on again after you’ve signed in. Free
  • Why it can’t connect. When a VPN, iCloud Private Relay or custom DNS hides the sign-in page, Kilobat names the layer that broke: VPN, DNS or the network. Free
  • See what’s using it. Every app’s upload and download, live in the menu bar, so you know which one is taking the shared link. Free
  • Mark it metered. macOS treats train Wi-Fi as unlimited. Mark it Metered and Kilobat skips its own speed tests; with automatic switching, Travel blocks backups and the like on that network. Pro
  • Send later. A big upload, such as Dropbox syncing a folder, can wait until you’re on unmetered Wi-Fi again, for up to eight hours while Kilobat is open. Pro

Questions

Is GWR Wi-Fi free?

Yes. GWR says its onboard Wi-Fi is free. Only calls to the support line may cost money.

Can I stream on GWR Wi-Fi?

GWR’s fair-use policy restricts streaming on board, so download video before you travel.

Why does GWR Wi-Fi drop out?

It relies on mobile signal, so tunnels and cuttings cause gaps. Speed also depends on how many people are online.

What is the GWR Wi-Fi network called?

GWR names its network GWR WiFi. Join it, then sign in on the page that opens.

Can you use a VPN on GWR Wi-Fi?

GWR says it cannot guarantee that any particular VPN will be compatible with the service.

Why won’t the GWR Wi-Fi sign-in page open on my Mac?

A VPN, iCloud Private Relay or your own DNS can keep the page from opening. Turn them off, open http://captive.apple.com in Safari, and turn the VPN on again after you’ve signed in. Kilobat shows Open sign-in page when a network is waiting for you.
