The rules
Streaming, calls and VPNs on Icelandair Wi-Fi
Streaming and calls
Streaming: A321LR and 737 MAXCalls: Not allowed
On the A321LR and 737 MAX, Icelandair calls the Wi-Fi home-quality broadband that handles streaming. It says speed isn’t affected by how many people are online. On the 757 and 767 the speed is similar to 3G, and Icelandair says it isn’t ideal for streaming.
VPNs
May be intermittent
Viasat’s terms for Icelandair say a VPN may be intermittent and need several logins, because of brief losses of connection. Icelandair doesn’t publish a VPN rule for the 757 and 767.
Aircraft
Who provides Icelandair Wi-Fi, and which planes have it
Airbus A321LR and Boeing 737 MAX. Icelandair’s Wi-Fi page sends these passengers to a Viasat sign-in page, and Viasat says it serves the whole 737 MAX fleet.
Icelandair lists Wi-Fi on its Airbus A321 and Boeing 757, 767 and 737 aircraft, from boarding until you leave the plane. There’s no Wi-Fi on domestic flights or flights to Greenland, because of the aircraft on those routes. Icelandair doesn’t name the provider on the 757 and 767.
Connectivity hell

Kilobat is a Mac menu-bar app that shows what each app sends and holds back what can wait. On Icelandair Wi-Fi:
The sign-in page. When it doesn’t open by itself, the menu bar says This Wi-Fi wants you to sign in, with Open sign-in page. Turn your VPN on after you’ve signed in.
Mark it metered. macOS treats plane Wi-Fi as unlimited. Mark it Metered in Kilobat’s Wi-Fi & Bluetooth menu or with kilobat networks cost metered, and Kilobat skips its own speed tests. If automatic switching is enabled, it switches to Travel.
Updates wait. With Pro, paused updaters enabled and the network filter on, macOS Software Update, App Store downloads, Google Updater and Microsoft AutoUpdate wait for an unmetered network. The apps keep working.
See what’s using it. Every app’s upload and download, live in the menu bar, so a messaging-only plan isn’t spent on a sync you forgot.
Send later. A big upload, such as Dropbox syncing a folder, shows as a row with its speed. With Pro, Send later can hold it until you’re on unmetered Wi-Fi again, for up to eight hours while Kilobat is open.
Know what’s slow. Health shows latency and loss, and with Pro their history through the flight. Those measurements can help you investigate a slow connection. When Slack or Zoom won’t load, Is it them or me? reads the service’s status page.
Kilobat is free to download and use. Pro adds the parts marked Pro, for $29 once for two Macs, with a 7-day free trial and 14-day refunds. More in what to do before you board.
