Who provides it

  • Viasat

European flights: the narrowbody and regional fleets, including KLM Cityhopper. The January 2026 plan covers 68 aircraft.

  • Starlink

KLM plans a phased rollout on intercontinental flights starting in mid-2027.

  • Gogo (2Ku)

Chosen in 2016 for 29 Boeing 777s and 12 Airbus A330s. KLM’s newsroom hasn’t said since what these aircraft use.

  • Panasonic Avionics

    Wi-Fi on KLM’s Boeing 787s, as of 2016.

What’s free

  • European flights: Wi-Fi is free and unlimited for Flying Blue members on equipped aircraft, since 22 January 2026.
  • You need to log in with a Flying Blue account, or register for one. Viasat says passengers can sign up on the spot.
  • Intercontinental flights: a messaging pass is free on flights with Wi-Fi. Free high-speed Wi-Fi for Flying Blue members starts in mid-2027, in phases.

As of November 2026.

Prices

KLM offers a free messaging pass on equipped intercontinental flights and paid internet passes. Its passenger page does not publish their prices.

Streaming and calls

KLM says its free European Wi-Fi lets you stream films and series, besides email, browsing, music and games. It says the same of the free intercontinental service due from mid-2027.

VPNs

KLM doesn’t publish a VPN rule in its newsroom announcements.

Which planes have it

Half the European fleet had Wi-Fi when the free service began on 22 January 2026. All A321neo and Embraer 195-E2 aircraft, and some Boeing 737-800s, follow in the coming years. By October 2026 KLM said most of its European fleet had it. Not every aircraft does, and the European fleet has no seat-back screens. On intercontinental flights, free Wi-Fi starts on equipped aircraft from mid-2027.

How to connect

On a European flight with Wi-Fi, as KLM and Viasat describe it:

  1. Connect your device to the on-board Wi-Fi.

  2. Open the KLM portal and log in with your Flying Blue account.

  3. If you’re not a member, register for Flying Blue in the portal. KLM says you can also sign up before the flight.

KLM’s newsroom doesn’t name the Wi-Fi network or give a portal address.

On board with Kilobat

Kilobat is a Mac menu-bar app that shows what each app sends and holds back what can wait. On a plane:

  • The sign-in page. When it doesn’t open by itself, the menu bar says This Wi-Fi wants you to sign in, with Open sign-in page. Turn your VPN on after you’ve signed in.
  • Mark it metered. macOS treats plane Wi-Fi as unlimited. Mark it Metered in Kilobat’s Wi-Fi menu or with kilobat networks cost metered, and Kilobat skips its own speed tests. If automatic switching is enabled, it switches to Travel.
  • Updates wait. With Pro, paused updaters enabled and the network filter on, macOS Software Update, App Store downloads, Google Updater and Microsoft AutoUpdate wait for an unmetered network. The apps keep working.
  • See what’s using it. Every app’s upload and download, live in the menu bar, so a messaging-only plan isn’t spent on a sync you forgot.
  • Send later. A big upload, such as Dropbox syncing a folder, shows as a row with its speed. With Pro, Send later can hold it until you’re on unmetered Wi-Fi again, for up to eight hours while Kilobat is open.
  • Know what’s slow. Health shows latency and loss, and with Pro their history through the flight. Those measurements can help you investigate a slow connection. When Slack or Zoom won’t load, Is it them or me? reads the service’s status page.
