PlayStation Wi-Fi: connect PS5 or PS4 and fix a dropped connection
A PS5 or PS4 can connect over Wi-Fi or an Ethernet cable. The console’s network test helps separate a connection problem from a PlayStation service problem.
- Wi-Fi
- Wi-Fi support varies by console model; check its specifications before choosing a band.
- Security
- PS5 setup lists WPA, WPA2 and WPA3; PS4 lists WPA and WPA2. Both list legacy WEP.
- Models
- PS5, PS5 Pro, PS4, PS4 Pro
Wi-Fi it needs
Choose a network your console supports and use the correct network name and password. Sony lists WPA3 for PS5 setup but not in its PS4 setup instructions. WEP is obsolete; prefer WPA2 or a compatible newer security mode.
Sony lists 2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the PS5 CFI-1202B and PS4 Pro CUH-7102B. Its European CFI-7100 PS5 Pro guide also lists 6 GHz; availability and restrictions depend on the console and region.
PS5 supports IPv6 alongside IPv4, but Sony says it cannot use an IPv6-only network. Ask the network administrator if you cannot change that setting.
PS5 Pro models in the CFI-7000 group can use Multi-Link Operation with a compatible access point. Sony suggests trying the connection with and without it if there are problems.
If you can run a cable from the router to the console, Sony also supports a wired LAN connection. A cable removes the Wi-Fi link from the path, though it cannot fix every internet or service issue.
Set it up
On PS5, connect from the network settings. The Wi-Fi password belongs to the network, not your PlayStation account.
Open Settings › Network › Settings › Set Up Internet Connection.
Choose the network and select Connect.
Enter its password when prompted.
Run the connection test when the setup is complete.
On PS4
Open Settings › Network › Set Up Internet Connection.
Choose Use Wi-Fi › Easy, then select the network.
Enter its password and run the offered internet connection test.
If the network is hidden or absent, Sony offers manual setup. Ask the network administrator for the details rather than guessing advanced settings.
How much data it uses
A connection test measures the connection at that moment. It is not a prediction of how much a game or system update will download later.
Sony’s network setup and troubleshooting pages do not give a single data-use figure for games, downloads or streaming. The amount varies with the game, updates and your use; check the download size and your provider’s allowance.
Guest, hotel and dorm Wi-Fi
Guest, hotel and dorm networks can impose a sign-in page or keep devices apart. Whether a console can complete sign-in depends on the network’s requirements; ask its administrator for a supported way to connect.
Client isolation can stop a phone or computer finding a console on the same guest network. It does not by itself prove that the console cannot reach the internet.
If the network uses device registration, ask the administrator how to register the console. Do not change security settings on a network you do not manage.
When it won’t connect
Sony recommends checking the network settings and PlayStation service status before changing advanced settings.
Check that the network name, password and security method are correct.
Check the PlayStation status page for an outage or maintenance.
Restart the console and run its internet connection test.
Move the console closer to the router and remove obstructions where possible.
If available, try a wired LAN connection.
Advanced IP, DNS, MTU and proxy settings are for a specific network configuration. Sony recommends asking your provider or administrator if you are unfamiliar with them.
When it keeps going offline
If a connection that used to work drops, check whether other devices also lost internet and whether PlayStation services are available.
Restart the console and test its internet connection.
Turn off the router, wait at least five minutes, then turn it on again.
Try the console nearer the router or connect it by Ethernet.
Check for console system software updates when the connection returns.
Contact the network provider or PlayStation support if the problem persists.
Restart shared network equipment only when it is yours to manage and others can tolerate the interruption.
Questions
Does a PS5 work on an IPv6-only network?
Sony says PS5 supports IPv6 but not IPv6-only connections. The network also needs IPv4.
Can I connect a PlayStation by cable?
Yes. Sony documents wired LAN setup for PS5 and PS4. Choose wired setup in the console’s network settings.

See your network from your Mac
Kilobat is a Mac menu-bar app with a CLI and an MCP server for AI agents. It lists the devices on your Wi-Fi and says when a new one joins, keeps a history of the router’s and the internet’s health, scans nearby channels, and shows which app on your Mac is using the network. Read the docs.
