Tips

When Suvarnabhumi Wi-Fi won’t play along

From Suvarnabhumi

  • Connect only to the official network, not to look-alike networks that could be set up to intercept data.
  • Airports of Thailand suggests a VPN, turning off file sharing and keeping the firewall on.
  • It suggests forgetting the network after use and avoiding banking or card payments on public Wi-Fi.

On a Mac

  • No sign-in page? Open http://captive.apple.com in Safari. A plain http page can be redirected to the airport’s sign-in page; an https one can’t.
  • Pause what hides it. A VPN, iCloud Private Relay or your own DNS can keep the page from opening. Turn them off, sign in, then turn them back on.
  • Forget and rejoin. A network the Mac already knows may not show the sign-in window again. Forget it in System Settings › Wi-Fi and join once more.
  • Look behind your windows. macOS opens the sign-in page in a small window of its own, which can open behind the others.

At the gate with Kilobat

Airport Wi-Fi on a Mac, without the guesswork

Kilobat is a Mac menu-bar app that shows what each app sends and holds back what can wait. At Suvarnabhumi:

  • It spots the sign-in page Free

When the page doesn’t open by itself, the menu bar says This Wi-Fi wants you to sign in, with Open sign-in page. When a sign-in runs out, it says Logged out by the Wi-Fi’s sign-in page instead of blaming DNS.

  • It warns you before time runs out Pro

Kilobat learns how long sign-ins last on each network, and warns you about five minutes before the next logout. While you’re signed in, the menu shows the time left.

  • It holds back what can wait Pro

Airport Wi-Fi is shared by a terminal full of people. Switch to the Travel profile and only the apps you allowed connect. Mark the network Metered and Kilobat switches to Travel by itself.

  • It checks the line before a call Free

The stutter test pings the internet every 50 ms for 20 seconds and shows the spikes an average hides. Check before meetings warns you five minutes before a call if something would freeze it; with Pro, one button pauses the culprits.
