ANA Wi-Fi

ANA’s Wi-Fi comes from Panasonic Avionics, Inmarsat or Viasat, depending on the aircraft. On equipped domestic flights it’s free in every class; international options vary by aircraft and cabin.

Streaming and calls

On international A380s, 787s and 777s, video streaming isn’t available, but music streaming works. The Viasat 767s allow video streaming. On domestic Wi-Fi aircraft, video streaming is available. Services such as Netflix need your own subscription. ANA asks passengers not to make voice or video calls.

VPNs

ANA doesn’t publish a VPN rule. It says limits apply to large uploads and downloads.

Which planes have it

On many aircraft, Wi-Fi works from about 5 minutes after take-off until 5 minutes before landing; some equipped aircraft offer gate-to-gate service. Some 767s have no Wi-Fi, and nor does the domestic Dash 8-400. Europe flights rerouted over the Arctic lose the satellite link for about 1–2 hours.

How to connect

  1. Turn on airplane mode, then turn Wi-Fi on.

  2. International: connect to ANA WiFi Service. Domestic: connect to ANA-WiFi-Service.

  3. Scan the QR code, or go to portal.inflight.ana-panasonic.aero (international) or www.ana-inflight-wifi.com (domestic).

  4. Click Connect Internet (international) or Internet (domestic). First and Business passengers enter their voucher code.

On the Viasat 767s, enter wifi.inflight.viasat.com if the usual address doesn’t work. On domestic flights you can also connect through the ANA app. ANA says to turn off Private Browsing on an iPhone and allow JavaScript and cookies.

On board with Kilobat

Kilobat is a Mac menu-bar app that shows what each app sends and holds back what can wait. On a plane:

  • The sign-in page. When it doesn’t open by itself, the menu bar says This Wi-Fi wants you to sign in, with Open sign-in page. Turn your VPN on after you’ve signed in.
  • Mark it metered. macOS treats plane Wi-Fi as unlimited. Mark it Metered in Kilobat’s Wi-Fi menu or with kilobat networks cost metered, and Kilobat skips its own speed tests. If automatic switching is enabled, it switches to Travel.
  • Updates wait. With Pro, paused updaters enabled and the network filter on, macOS Software Update, App Store downloads, Google Updater and Microsoft AutoUpdate wait for an unmetered network. The apps keep working.
  • See what’s using it. Every app’s upload and download, live in the menu bar, so a messaging-only plan isn’t spent on a sync you forgot.
  • Send later. A big upload, such as Dropbox syncing a folder, shows as a row with its speed. With Pro, Send later can hold it until you’re on unmetered Wi-Fi again, for up to eight hours while Kilobat is open.
  • Know what’s slow. Health shows latency and loss, and with Pro their history through the flight. Those measurements can help you investigate a slow connection. When Slack or Zoom won’t load, Is it them or me? reads the service’s status page.
