Who provides it

  • Gogo 2Ku

Cathay chose Gogo’s 2Ku satellite system for its Boeing 777 and A330 fleets in 2017. Its current pages don’t name the supplier.

  • A second supplier, not named

Cathay says its A350s use a different connectivity supplier from its 777s, A330s and A321neos, so coverage differs by aircraft.

Streaming and calls

Cathay says you can watch short videos with the Flight Pass and 3-Hour Pass. Quality depends on where the aircraft is and how many people are online. Its free Wi-Fi also covers audio streaming and cloud storage.

VPNs

VPNs can work. Cathay says rare VPN problems usually come from the VPN’s own security settings. It suggests asking your IT department to allow connections with latency over 800 ms.

Which planes have it

Cathay says Wi-Fi is on all its aircraft. It may be available below 10,000 feet on some flights where permitted; otherwise it starts after reaching 10,000 feet and connecting to the satellite. The seatback screen shows when it’s ready. Cathay says polar routes to the North American east coast can experience gaps of one to three hours. Gate-to-gate Wi-Fi is being switched on country by country.

How to connect

  1. Switch on airplane mode, then turn Wi-Fi on.

  2. Connect to the Cathay Pacific network.

  3. A sign-in page should open. If it doesn’t, type wifi.cathaypacific.com into your browser.

  4. Select your internet pass and pay.

The email receipt has your login details. To switch device, choose Login on the new device and enter them. Gaps can also happen when the aircraft switches between satellite beams or in bad weather. On the A350 you can also use mobile roaming from 20,000 feet, but not in the United States.

On board with Kilobat

Kilobat is a Mac menu-bar app that shows what each app sends and holds back what can wait. On a plane:

  • The sign-in page. When it doesn’t open by itself, the menu bar says This Wi-Fi wants you to sign in, with Open sign-in page. Turn your VPN on after you’ve signed in.
  • Mark it metered. macOS treats plane Wi-Fi as unlimited. Mark it Metered in Kilobat’s Wi-Fi menu or with kilobat networks cost metered, and Kilobat skips its own speed tests. If automatic switching is enabled, it switches to Travel.
  • Updates wait. With Pro, paused updaters enabled and the network filter on, macOS Software Update, App Store downloads, Google Updater and Microsoft AutoUpdate wait for an unmetered network. The apps keep working.
  • See what’s using it. Every app’s upload and download, live in the menu bar, so a messaging-only plan isn’t spent on a sync you forgot.
  • Send later. A big upload, such as Dropbox syncing a folder, shows as a row with its speed. With Pro, Send later can hold it until you’re on unmetered Wi-Fi again, for up to eight hours while Kilobat is open.
  • Know what’s slow. Health shows latency and loss, and with Pro their history through the flight. Those measurements can help you investigate a slow connection. When Slack or Zoom won’t load, Is it them or me? reads the service’s status page.
