Streaming and calls
On Starlink you can stream, game, browse and message, and Virgin Atlantic quotes speeds of up to 1 Gbps. Short voice calls are fine, but video calls are not allowed. Use headphones, and turn calls off when the cabin lights are dimmed. On the A330-300, Virgin Atlantic says the Wi-Fi is “not quite up to streaming”.
VPNs
Virgin Atlantic doesn’t publish a VPN rule. Its Starlink Wi-Fi is Friendly WiFi certified and filters content, and it says inappropriate sites are blocked on its older Wi-Fi.
Which planes have it
Virgin Atlantic says Starlink is available across its A350 fleet, with other aircraft being fitted. Virgin Atlantic planned to connect about two-thirds of its fleet by the end of 2026. The A330neo is due to finish in 2027, when the whole fleet should have Starlink.
How to connect
On a Starlink aircraft:
Connect to the Virgin Atlantic WiFi network.
Sign in with your Flying Club details. If you aren’t a member, join before you fly.
You can connect several devices.
On other aircraft, keep flight mode on and turn Wi-Fi on once the crew switches it on after take-off. You are sent to virgin-atlantic-wifi.com to choose a package. Service runs above 10,000 ft and is switched off over some restricted regions. A paid package works on one device at a time, but with an account you can move it to another.
On board with Kilobat
Kilobat is a Mac menu-bar app that shows what each app sends and holds back what can wait. On a plane:
- The sign-in page. When it doesn’t open by itself, the menu bar says This Wi-Fi wants you to sign in, with Open sign-in page. Turn your VPN on after you’ve signed in.
- Mark it metered. macOS treats plane Wi-Fi as unlimited. Mark it Metered in Kilobat’s Wi-Fi menu or with
kilobat networks cost metered, and Kilobat skips its own speed tests. If automatic switching is enabled, it switches to Travel. - Updates wait. With Pro, paused updaters enabled and the network filter on, macOS Software Update, App Store downloads, Google Updater and Microsoft AutoUpdate wait for an unmetered network. The apps keep working.
- See what’s using it. Every app’s upload and download, live in the menu bar, so a messaging-only plan isn’t spent on a sync you forgot.
- Send later. A big upload, such as Dropbox syncing a folder, shows as a row with its speed. With Pro, Send later can hold it until you’re on unmetered Wi-Fi again, for up to eight hours while Kilobat is open.
- Know what’s slow. Health shows latency and loss, and with Pro their history through the flight. Those measurements can help you investigate a slow connection. When Slack or Zoom won’t load, Is it them or me? reads the service’s status page.
