Wi-Fi slow but Ethernet fast? Find the wireless bottleneck

If the same device is consistently faster on Ethernet, investigate the wireless path first. Three matched tests are more useful than a single speed-test screenshot.

When this helps

  • Downloads work beside the router but crawl in another room.
  • Ethernet is fast while video calls on Wi-Fi freeze.

Compare three places on the same device

  1. Run a wired test through a router LAN port, with Wi-Fi disabled.

  2. Disconnect Ethernet and test on Wi-Fi beside the router.

  3. Repeat in the room where the problem happens, using the same server.

  4. Repeat the sequence while other household traffic is quiet.

Change one thing and retest

A mesh satellite needs a good connection back to the router. Placing it inside the dead spot can preserve the bottleneck.

Use the router guides for the exact menus. Keep the old settings so you can reverse a change.

  1. Move the router into an open position away from thick walls and metal obstructions.

  2. Compare another device in the same location. A device-specific difference narrows the search.

  3. If using mesh, test near the main router and a satellite separately.

  4. Check your router maker’s band and channel guidance before changing settings.

Will a faster internet plan help?

A faster plan cannot repair a weak wireless link. First establish whether wired performance already meets your needs.

A speed test uses real data. Keep repeated testing modest on a metered or mobile connection.
