Why is my internet slow at night but fast in the morning?

An evening pattern is useful evidence, but it does not identify the cause by itself. Compare the same connection at quiet and busy times.

When this helps

  • Downloads slow down every evening.
  • Calls are fine in the morning and unreliable after dinner.

Use a two-day comparison

  1. Choose one device, one test server and one connection type.

  2. Test once during a quiet period and again during the usual slowdown.

  3. Repeat on a second day without changing the setup.

  4. Record household streaming, backups and game downloads alongside each result.

Separate three different evening problems

What to ask your ISP

Send morning and evening results together. Include dates, connection type and whether the router itself offers a line test.

Ask whether the provider sees line errors, a provisioned-speed issue or congestion during those hours. Request a reference and a follow-up date.

Australian NBN customers can also compare the plan’s typical evening speed: NBN speed complaints.

What to save for your provider

Use a spreadsheet, screenshots or handwritten notes. Keep your original results; a summary is easier to assess alongside the underlying measurements.

  1. Record the date, local time, device, connection type and test server.

  2. Save download, upload and latency results, plus the symptom you noticed.

  3. Note active downloads, uploads and VPN use. Repeat the same setup at a different time.
