Speed test fast but internet slow? Check latency, DNS and the service
A speed test measures transfers to one test service. Web browsing and calls also depend on response time, name lookups and the destination you actually use.
When this helps
- Speed tests look good but websites hesitate.
- Calls freeze even though download speeds are high.
Match the symptom to the next test
| What feels slow | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Every site pauses before loading | Name lookups and browser or VPN behaviour |
| Calls lag during uploads | Latency while the upload runs and while it is paused |
| One app or website only | Its official status page and another network |
| One device only | Another device on the same Wi-Fi |
| Everything stalls briefly | Router reachability and connection interruptions |
Try these checks in order
Open two unrelated websites and the affected service. Note which ones fail.
Check the affected service’s official status page.
Pause an active upload or backup and repeat the call or browsing test.
Compare another device on the same network.
If available, compare Ethernet or a separate mobile connection. Note any data costs.
Read more than the download number
Latency describes delay; jitter describes variation in that delay. A short interruption can damage a call even when average throughput is high.
Cloudflare’s speed test explains its measurement method and offers raw measurements. Different servers and methods can produce different results.
On a Mac, networkQuality can help compare responsiveness under load. No Kilobat installation is needed.
