Air Canada’s free Wi-Fi terms refer to Intelsat’s Wi-Fi Onboard terms. The airline does not identify the equipment on each flight here.
What’s free
- Aeroplan members get free Wi-Fi on Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge and Air Canada Express flights within North America and to Sun destinations. The aircraft must have high-speed connectivity.
- Add your Aeroplan number to the booking or at check-in. Joining Aeroplan is free, but Air Canada says to enrol before the flight.
- Business Class passengers and people on the same reservation as an Aeroplan member also get it free. So do United MileagePlus members who add their number to the booking.
- Free texting is open to Aeroplan members on Wi-Fi-equipped flights. It covers apps such as iMessage, WhatsApp, Messenger and WeChat, but not photos, videos, attachments or SMS.
- Everyone can use aircanada.com and the Air Canada app on board without buying Wi-Fi.
- To get free Wi-Fi you must consent to Air Canada collecting and using your personal information, as set out in its Wi-Fi privacy terms.
- Free Wi-Fi on long-haul international flights is “planned to be added in 2026”, Air Canada says. Its Wi-Fi page still describes it as planned.
As of November 2026.
Prices
Air Canada doesn’t publish Wi-Fi prices. It says prices vary by flight duration and appear after you sign in to the onboard portal.
You can pay by major credit card, or buy a pass priced in Aeroplan points and redeem it on board.
As of November 2026.
Streaming and calls
Air Canada calls the free service “streaming quality” internet, gate to gate, on eligible flights within North America and to Sun destinations. Voice and VoIP calls are not supported.
VPNs
Air Canada doesn’t publish a VPN rule. Its terms say it may filter traffic against malware, phishing and other security threats.
Which planes have it
Air Canada says Wi-Fi is available on most Air Canada flights and all Air Canada Rouge flights. Its terms limit service to select North American and international flights. Air Canada advertises free Wi-Fi on equipped flights at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport; the Dash 8-400 has its own Wi-Fi terms. On the Air Canada site you can check a flight’s Wi-Fi up to five days ahead.

On board with Kilobat
Kilobat is a Mac menu-bar app that shows what each app sends and holds back what can wait. On a plane:
- The sign-in page. When it doesn’t open by itself, the menu bar says This Wi-Fi wants you to sign in, with Open sign-in page. Turn your VPN on after you’ve signed in.
- Mark it metered. macOS treats plane Wi-Fi as unlimited. Mark it Metered in Kilobat’s Wi-Fi menu or with
kilobat networks cost metered, and Kilobat skips its own speed tests. If automatic switching is enabled, it switches to Travel. - Updates wait. With Pro, paused updaters enabled and the network filter on, macOS Software Update, App Store downloads, Google Updater and Microsoft AutoUpdate wait for an unmetered network. The apps keep working.
- See what’s using it. Every app’s upload and download, live in the menu bar, so a messaging-only plan isn’t spent on a sync you forgot.
- Send later. A big upload, such as Dropbox syncing a folder, shows as a row with its speed. With Pro, Send later can hold it until you’re on unmetered Wi-Fi again, for up to eight hours while Kilobat is open.
- Know what’s slow. Health shows latency and loss, and with Pro their history through the flight. Those measurements can help you investigate a slow connection. When Slack or Zoom won’t load, Is it them or me? reads the service’s status page.
