Prices

WestJet Rewards membership is required for WestJet Wi-Fi, which is free for members. WestJet Connect internet prices appear in the onboard portal or the app’s Inflight tab.

WestJet Connect sends a receipt by email after you buy. You can ask for a refund if the connection didn’t work.

Streaming and calls

On WestJet Wi-Fi you can stream from your own accounts, such as Netflix, Disney+ or YouTube. WestJet calls the speed “similar to home internet”. Video and voice calls are not allowed, including Wi-Fi calling and VoIP. On WestJet Connect, streaming services, VoIP and app downloads are not supported.

VPNs

WestJet doesn’t publish a VPN rule. It does say that iCloud Private Relay can cause an error on WestJet Wi-Fi, and that you should turn it off if so.

Which planes have it

WestJet Wi-Fi is on over 100 aircraft in the Boeing 737 fleet. WestJet planned to finish its 737-800 and 737-8 MAX fleet by the end of 2025, and its wide-bodies by the end of 2026. Its 787 page still lists Wi-Fi “for a fee”. Check your flight in the WestJet Flight Guide within 72 hours of departure, or in your pre-flight email.

How to connect

On a plane with WestJet Wi-Fi:

  1. Turn on airplane mode.

  2. Connect to the WestJet Wi-Fi network.

  3. Sign in to the WestJet app and select WestJet Wi-Fi. Without the app, scan the QR code on the seatback card.

  4. If it doesn’t connect, ask the cabin crew.

On a plane with WestJet Connect, join the WestJetConnect network. Then open the app’s Inflight tab, or go to westjetconnect.com in a browser, to buy internet.

On board with Kilobat

Kilobat is a Mac menu-bar app that shows what each app sends and holds back what can wait. On a plane:

  • The sign-in page. When it doesn’t open by itself, the menu bar says This Wi-Fi wants you to sign in, with Open sign-in page. Turn your VPN on after you’ve signed in.
  • Mark it metered. macOS treats plane Wi-Fi as unlimited. Mark it Metered in Kilobat’s Wi-Fi menu or with kilobat networks cost metered, and Kilobat skips its own speed tests. If automatic switching is enabled, it switches to Travel.
  • Updates wait. With Pro, paused updaters enabled and the network filter on, macOS Software Update, App Store downloads, Google Updater and Microsoft AutoUpdate wait for an unmetered network. The apps keep working.
  • See what’s using it. Every app’s upload and download, live in the menu bar, so a messaging-only plan isn’t spent on a sync you forgot.
  • Send later. A big upload, such as Dropbox syncing a folder, shows as a row with its speed. With Pro, Send later can hold it until you’re on unmetered Wi-Fi again, for up to eight hours while Kilobat is open.
  • Know what’s slow. Health shows latency and loss, and with Pro their history through the flight. Those measurements can help you investigate a slow connection. When Slack or Zoom won’t load, Is it them or me? reads the service’s status page.

More in what to do before you board.
