Error messages
Unable to join a Wi-Fi network on Mac
If your Mac cannot join Wi-Fi, check the network name, password, range and security settings. The message alone does not identify the cause.
Symptoms
- The Mac cannot join the selected Wi-Fi network.
- It asks for a password again or reports that it could not join.
Likely causes
- Incorrect network name or credentials. A hidden network needs the correct name and security type as well as its password.
- Range or radio conditions. The Mac may be too far from the access point.
- Network access controls. A managed network may require the administrator to register the Mac's Wi-Fi address.
How to check
Confirm that Wi-Fi is on and that you selected the intended network.
Move closer to the access point and try again.
Check the password and security type with the network administrator. Do not share the password in a support report.
For a hidden network, check the network name as well.
How to fix it
Enter the correct credentials and try to join again.
On a managed network, ask its administrator about access controls and enrollment.
If your own router is unavailable to other devices too, restart it and wait for it to come back.
Use Wireless Diagnostics if the problem continues. See Use Wireless Diagnostics and wdutil on a Mac.
Questions
Does this message mean the Wi-Fi password is wrong?
Not necessarily. Range, the security type and network access controls can also prevent joining.
Is joining Wi-Fi the same as having internet access?
No. A joined network must also provide a working path to the internet.
