Hotspots and data
How much data does Microsoft Teams use on a Mac?
Microsoft Teams data use depends on what you do and the settings you choose. Check a real session before relying on an estimate.
When to check
- You want to use Microsoft Teams on a hotspot or limited connection.
- The data allowance is falling faster than expected.
How much data it uses
- What the provider says. Microsoft recommends 1.5 Mbps each way for one-to-one video, with up to 1080p. If both rates stayed constant for an hour, the sum would be 1.35 GB. This is a planning illustration, not a measured total.
- Why your total differs. The number of participants, resolution, frame rate and meeting layout change traffic.
Measure a session
Open Activity Monitor, choose Network, and find the Teams process or the browser used for Teams.
Note Sent Bytes and Rcvd Bytes before and after a session. Add their changes for a rough total.
Activity Monitor counts processes, not individual browser tabs. Other activity in the same browser affects the result.
A process restart resets its counters. A service can also use helper processes that need separate checks.
Reduce data use
When suitable, turn off your camera or share one window instead of your entire screen.
Use a short test on the same connection to compare before and after.
With Kilobat
Open Kilobat to see traffic for apps on this Mac. Browser activity appears under the browser.
Questions
Is there a fixed Microsoft Teams data cost per hour?
No. Settings and activity change the amount. Provider figures are estimates or rates, not your carrier bill.
Does a Mac show all hotspot traffic?
No. Other devices and the phone can also use the allowance. Compare with the carrier total.
