Amazon Alexa smart home: Echo hubs, Thread, Matter and sharing devices

Alexa’s smart home runs from the Alexa app. Echo speakers and displays act as its Matter controllers, and many Echo and eero devices also have a Thread border router or a Zigbee hub built in.

What Alexa smart home is

The Alexa app adds and controls smart-home devices. Some connect straight to an Echo over Matter, Zigbee or Bluetooth. Others connect through their maker’s cloud and an Alexa skill, which you turn on by linking accounts.

For Matter, the Echo is the controller: it finds and connects Matter devices on your home network. Amazon says its Matter-enabled Echo devices use the Matter 1.5 SDK and support a subset of Matter 1.5 and earlier device types. They include lights, plugs, buttons, sensors, locks, blinds, thermostats, fans, air purifiers, some appliances and robot vacuums.

Amazon lists most Echo speakers and displays from the 2nd generation on as Matter-enabled, along with Echo Flex, Echo Input, Echo Pop, Echo Hub and eero routers. Check for the “Works with Alexa” badge on the device or its box.

Hubs and Thread border routers

Thread devices need a Thread border router before they can join. Amazon lists these Echo and eero devices with one built in, by Thread version.

  • Zigbee: some Echo and eero devices have a built-in Zigbee hub, for Zigbee 1.2 and 3.0 devices. Amazon lists them on its Zigbee support page.
  • Thread credentials: with your permission, a maker’s Alexa add-on can use the Thread network details Alexa keeps, so you don’t enter them for each device.
  • No Thread-enabled Echo? Amazon says to set the Thread device up with another Thread-enabled voice assistant first, then add it to Alexa.

What it needs from your network

Amazon’s help pages give a short list.

Amazon’s help pages don’t document IPv6, mDNS or multicast, VLAN or client-isolation requirements for Alexa’s Matter devices.

  • 2.4 GHz and the same network: a Matter Wi-Fi device must be on the same 2.4 GHz network as your compatible Echo. Amazon also says to connect other Wi-Fi smart devices on the 2.4 GHz band.
  • Distance: set Matter devices up within 30 ft (9 m) of the Echo or other Matter controller. Zigbee devices need to be within 30 ft of the Zigbee hub or another Zigbee device.
  • Bluetooth for setup: many devices receive Wi-Fi or Thread network details over Bluetooth Low Energy. Follow the Alexa app’s setup prompts.
  • Internet: ask your Echo “Are you online?” to check its connection.

Matter, and sharing with other assistants

  1. Put the device in pairing mode, as its maker describes.

  2. In the Alexa app, tap Devices, then the plus (+) icon, then Add Device.

  3. Tap the Matter icon in the Shortcuts bar, then Yes.

  4. Scan the Matter QR code, or enter the pairing code from the device or its instructions.

Share an Alexa device with another assistant

  1. In the Alexa app, open Devices and select the Matter device.

  2. Choose Other Assistants and Apps › Add another.

  3. Copy the 11-digit pairing code. It expires after 15 minutes.

  4. Enter the code in the other assistant’s app.

Add a device that another assistant already controls

  1. Generate an 11-digit pairing code in the other assistant’s app.

  2. In the Alexa app, tap Devices, the plus (+) icon and Add Device.

  3. Tap Matter, then Yes, then Try Numeric Code Instead?

  4. Enter the 11-digit code and follow the steps.

Don’t use the code printed on the device or its box to share it. Amazon directs users to a sharing code for an already connected device; use the other app’s sharing instructions.

Stop another assistant controlling a device

  1. Open the device in the Alexa app and tap Settings.

  2. Choose Other Assistants and Apps.

  3. Tap the delete icon next to the assistant, then Delete.

Common problems and Amazon’s fixes

A new device won’t connect

  1. Unplug your Echo and the smart device, then plug them back in.

  2. Put the device in pairing mode; Matter, Zigbee and Bluetooth devices need it.

  3. Install any software updates for both devices.

  4. Move the device within 30 ft (9 m) of the Echo.

  5. Check that a Wi-Fi device is on the same 2.4 GHz network as the Echo.

A device that worked has stopped responding

  1. Remove the device in the Alexa app.

  2. Set it up again.

  3. If it still fails, consult the device maker and Amazon before resetting. A reset can remove existing settings.

“No new devices found”

The device may already have connected through Frustration-Free Setup. Look for it under Devices in the Alexa app.

Questions

Do Alexa Matter devices need 2.4 GHz?

Amazon says a Matter Wi-Fi device must be on the same 2.4 GHz network as your compatible Echo.

Kilobat is a Mac menu-bar app with a CLI and an MCP server for AI agents. It lists the devices on your Wi-Fi and says when a new one joins, keeps a history of the router’s and the internet’s health, scans nearby channels, and shows which app on your Mac is using the network. Read the docs.
