What is ScreenTimeAgent?
ScreenTimeAgent supports Screen Time. Apple says that Screen Time can sync your usage and settings across devices with the same Apple Account, end-to-end encrypted.
Short answer
Part of macOS. It supports Screen Time, which can sync your usage and limits across your devices through iCloud.
Block with care
Blocking it stops Screen Time data syncing between devices. For a child's device, it can stop limits from arriving.

What it is
The man page says only that ScreenTimeAgent “supports the Screen Time feature”. It is in the ScreenTimeCore framework, started for each user as com.apple.ScreenTimeAgent.
Apple Platform Security says that Screen Time controls and usage data can sync across devices with the same Apple Account, using CloudKit end-to-end encryption. This needs two-factor authentication, and syncing is on by default.
For families, Apple says that usage data and settings travel between a parent's and a child's devices with the end-to-end encrypted IDS protocol.
Why it uses the network
- Sync between your devices. Your usage and Screen Time settings sync through CloudKit, so the report covers all your devices.
- Family Sharing. A child's usage goes to the family organizer, and settings go the other way.
- App icons. Apple says that app icons in Screen Time reports come directly from the App Store, which keeps no data from these requests.
How much is normal
Small, occasional sync traffic is usual with Screen Time on.
Apple says that clearing Safari history or deleting an app removes the matching usage data on all synced devices.
With Screen Time off, it should be quiet.
With analytics sharing on, Apple says that it collects only anonymized data about how the Screen Time feature is used.
When it uses a lot, and why
- Not documented as heavy. Screen Time data is small. Many devices in a family can mean more frequent, but still small, syncs.
Is it safe to block?
Block with care
Blocking it stops Screen Time data syncing between devices. For a child's device, it can stop limits from arriving.
What breaks if you block it
- Screen Time reports stop including your other devices.
- Changes a parent makes to a child's limits may not arrive, and the child's usage may not reach the parent.
Blocking means a firewall rule that refuses its connections. Don’t quit or disable a macOS process to save data: macOS starts it again, and other features depend on it.
Reduce its use
Choose Apple menu › System Settings › Screen Time.
To keep usage on this Mac only, turn off Share Across Devices. The option is in Screen Time settings.
Turn off App & Website Activity if you don't use Screen Time.
Don't quit
ScreenTimeAgentin Activity Monitor. macOS starts it again.
See how much it uses
Open Activity Monitor from Applications › Utilities. Click Network.
Type
ScreenTimeAgentin the search field. The Sent Bytes and Rcvd Bytes columns show what it moved since it started. In Terminal, watch only this process. Press d to show the change per second, and q to quit.

With Kilobat
In the Kilobat app list, search for
ScreenTimeAgent. Its row shows the live rate and what it moved today. In Connections, click the ⓘ button on one of its rows. The popover shows this page’s short answer, without going online.
In Terminal, ask the same question. Add
--jsonfor scripts and agents.kilobat explain 'ScreenTimeAgent'Show its traffic over one day.
kilobat bandwidth 'ScreenTimeAgent' dayThrough MCP, an AI agent asks
explain_connectionwith the process name. It gets the same facts.
The live view and the explanations are free. History in the app needs Kilobat Pro. Blocking needs Pro and the network filter: see the network filter, Protection and the hotspot data saver.
Hosts it contacts
Apple and the maker document these hosts for this feature. A process can also contact others; Kilobat’s Connections tab shows what it actually opens on your Mac.
