GeForce NOW on a Mac
GeForce NOW on your Mac, without the stutter.
GeForce NOW runs on a Mac in NVIDIA’s own app or in Safari, Chrome and Opera GX. It asks for 25 Mbps for 1080p at 60 FPS and less than 80 ms to one of NVIDIA’s data centers. Here is what each quality needs, what that means on a hotspot, and how Kilobat finds what gets in the way.
brew install seifip/kilobat/kilobat- Free forever
- Pro $29 once
- 14-day refunds
- macOS 14+
- Open-source CLI
Wi-Fi is on 2.4 GHz. Join your router’s 5 GHz network or use Ethernet: NVIDIA asks for one or the other.
Internet speed for each quality
NVIDIA’s requirements for macOS as of November 2026. It also requires less than 80 ms of network latency from an NVIDIA data center, and recommends a wired Ethernet connection or a router with 5 GHz Wi-Fi. NVIDIA doesn’t publish data per hour; the last column is what a stream at that speed would move in an hour.
| Quality | Connection | At that rate for an hour |
|---|---|---|
| 720p, up to 60 FPS | 15 Mbps | 6.8 GB |
| 1080p, 60 FPS | 25 Mbps | 11 GB |
| 1440p and ultrawide 1440p, 120 FPS | 35 Mbps | 16 GB |
| 4K, 120 FPS | 45 Mbps | 20 GB |
| 1440p and 1080p, 240 and 360 FPS | 55 Mbps | 25 GB |
| 5K (5120×2180), 120 FPS | 65 Mbps | 29 GB |
Browsers need up to 35 Mbps, for 1440p at 120 FPS. NVIDIA’s FAQ adds 55 Mbps for 2560×1440 at 240 FPS on most iMacs and 2560×1600 on most MacBooks, and recommends 100 Mbps for Cinematic Quality Streaming. In the Mac app, 4K, 5K, ultrawide, HDR and 90 to 360 FPS need a premium membership. 1440p at 120 FPS in a browser needs Ultimate; an older NVIDIA release note says it isn’t available in Mac browsers, and the current requirements page doesn’t say either way.
Playing on a Mac
| Mac app | macOS 10.15 or later, on any Mac from 2009 or later; it runs natively on Apple silicon. |
|---|---|
| Browsers | Safari 16.4 or later, Chrome 77 or later and Opera GX 117 or later, at play.geforcenow.com. |
| Data centers | Run by NVIDIA in North America (Northern and Southern California, Oregon, Arizona, Texas, Illinois, Florida, Georgia, Virginia, New Jersey, Ontario, Quebec), Europe (two in the UK, Sweden, two in the Netherlands, Germany, two in France, Poland, Bulgaria), India and Japan. Alliance partners run GeForce NOW in Taiwan, Turkey, Latin America (Montevideo, Santiago, Bogotá), Australia, the Caucasus, Malaysia, Korea, South Africa and Thailand. |
| Playtime | Performance and Ultimate memberships include 100 hours a month; up to 15 unused hours roll over. |
Tips for GeForce NOW on a Mac
- Use Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi, as NVIDIA recommends. A Mac on 2.4 GHz shares a slower, busier band.
- Bring a mouse with two buttons and a wheel. NVIDIA notes the Magic Mouse lacks the dedicated buttons and scroll wheel most games need.
- A mouse that stutters may do better at a 125 Hz polling rate, NVIDIA says.
- Pause AirDrop while you play. Its scans pull the Wi-Fi radio off your channel every few seconds; Kilobat pauses it in one click until the session ends.
- Let Photos, iCloud Drive and backups wait. A big upload queues the game’s traffic behind it. Kilobat names the one that’s running.
How Kilobat helps
The session, measured. The stutters, explained.
Kilobat notices GeForce NOW in its Mac app by the app itself, and in Safari, Chrome or Opera GX once the browser is talking to play.geforcenow.com or NVIDIA’s session hosts while the stream comes in. While you play it shows the ping to the stream’s server, jitter, loss, the bitrate and the data so far, and flags AirDrop, 2.4 GHz, a weak signal and busy apps as they happen.
- One click pauses AirDrop, and with Pro holds Dropbox, Google Drive and Steam downloads, until the session ends.
- On a hotspot it shows the data an hour and the projected total, so 100 hours a month don’t eat the plan.
- Afterwards a report says when it stuttered and what was going on: “Stuttered at 21:14 for 40s: 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi while iCloud Photos uploaded.”

Questions
What internet speed does GeForce NOW need on a Mac?
15 Mbps for 720p at up to 60 FPS, 25 Mbps for 1080p at 60 FPS, 35 Mbps for 1440p at 120 FPS, 45 Mbps for 4K at 120 FPS, 55 Mbps for 240 and 360 FPS and 65 Mbps for 5K, with less than 80 ms to an NVIDIA data center.
How much data does GeForce NOW use an hour?
NVIDIA doesn’t publish a figure. A stream that ran at the 25 Mbps NVIDIA asks for 1080p at 60 FPS for a whole hour would move about 11 GB; at 45 Mbps for 4K, about 20 GB. Kilobat measures what your own session uses.
Should I use the Mac app or a browser?
The Mac app goes furthest, with 4K, 5K, ultrawide and up to 360 FPS on a premium membership. Safari, Chrome and Opera GX play at play.geforcenow.com; NVIDIA lists 1440p at 120 FPS in a browser for Ultimate, though an older release note leaves Mac browsers out.
Why does GeForce NOW stutter on my Mac when the speed test is fine?
Usually AirDrop scanning, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi or an upload in the background, which a ten-second speed test averages away. Kilobat flags each one while you play and says afterwards which one it was.
