Working from Turkey with a Mac: internet, eSIMs and what’s blocked

Turkey’s mobile networks are fast and most work tools load normally. The differences are a large and growing list of blocked sites, social media that can slow to a crawl during unrest, and a registration rule for phones brought from abroad that matters most if you stay for months and share your phone’s hotspot with your Mac.

Region
Europe and Asia
Blocked
Hundreds of thousands of domains and URLs4, Discord since October 20245, and more than a dozen VPN services4.
Calls
The documented risk is throttling during unrest; social media was throttled for 42 hours in March 20253.
SIM rule
A phone brought from abroad must be registered within 120 days of entry, or it is cut off from Turkish networks1.
VPN law
Individual VPN use isn’t addressed in law; BTK has blocked VPN services and Tor4.

Checked 1 November 2026. Rules and blocks change, sometimes overnight. Each claim links to its source; where a source and this page differ, the source wins.

What’s blocked or restricted

Blocking in Turkey runs mostly through court orders and the regulator, BTK, under Law No. 5651 on internet publications6.

  • Scale. More than 953,000 domains and 260,000 URLs were blocked as of December 20234.
  • Discord. Blocked since 9 October 2024, after an Ankara court ruling5. In June 2026 the transport minister said access would probably reopen after some time, without giving a date7.
  • Throttling. Instagram was blocked for nine days in August 2024, and social media access was throttled for 42 hours in March 2025, during protests over the arrest of Istanbul’s mayor3.

Throttling makes a service slow rather than gone, which looks like bad Wi-Fi. If one platform crawls while everything else is fast, that’s the likelier cause. When a site won’t load at all, Kilobat can identify signs of a network block or a service’s own regional refusal, though the result can be inconclusive. See blocked here, not down.

Calling apps

For calls, the documented risk is throttling during major events. In March 2025, major social media platforms were inaccessible for nearly two days3.

  • For an important call, have a second app ready that both sides already use, and an ordinary phone number.
  • Calls placed through your carrier aren’t internet calls and don’t depend on any app.

How mobile data reaches your Mac

There are three ways to get mobile data to your Mac. All of them reach your Mac through your phone’s hotspot, so your phone’s registration status matters too.

  • A Turkish SIM or eSIM. Operators sell tourist lines to foreign passport holders, such as Turkcell’s2. Your data goes through the Turkish network, so local blocks and throttling apply.
  • Roaming on your home SIM. Roaming data can be routed through your home carrier8, but the route and service availability vary by carrier and network. Check with your provider and do not rely on access to a specific service.
  • A travel eSIM. Many exit to the internet through another operator’s gateway in a third country89. What loads depends on that country, and sellers rarely say which it is.

Whatever the route, Turkish law still applies to what you do in Turkey.

What the law says about VPNs

Turkish law doesn’t address individuals’ use of VPNs directly. The regulator blocks VPN services instead.

  • In 2016 BTK ordered providers to block more than 10 VPN services and Tor, and 17 more VPN services were blocked around the end of 2023 without a court order4.
  • Under Law No. 5651, every business that offers internet access to the public, commercial or not, must block criminal content and keep access logs6. Hotel and café Wi-Fi is logged by law.

SIM and eSIM registration

BTK registers every phone by its IMEI, the number the phone shows when you dial *#06#1.

  • A phone brought from abroad must be registered within 120 days of your entry into Turkey. Unregistered devices are cut off from communication after that1.
  • Operators send a text every 30 days as the deadline approaches1.
  • You can’t register a phone if you registered another one brought from abroad in the last two calendar years, or once the 120 days have passed1.
  • People with a Turkish or foreign identity number register on the e-Devlet portal and pay a fee set each year1.
  • Tourist lines need a valid passport, and nothing else is accepted. Turkcell’s are sold within 90 days of arrival, and can be activated in its app as an eSIM with a chipped passport2.

Your Mac has no IMEI to register. If it gets its internet from your phone’s hotspot, the phone’s status decides whether the Mac is online.

Hotel and café Wi-Fi

Because public Wi-Fi is logged by law6, hotel, café and airport networks usually open on a sign-in page before you get online.

  • A sign-in page may text a code to the number you give. On a roaming number, that text can take a while.
  • Sign-in pages are ordinary web pages. If one never appears, see why the Wi-Fi sign-in page doesn’t show.

Prepare your Mac before you go

A little preparation covers the common problems.

  • If you’ll stay longer than 120 days with a Turkish line, plan the phone’s IMEI registration early. It can’t be done after the deadline1.
  • Download large installers and updates before you go, or on a fast hotel or coworking connection, not on the phone’s data.
  • For two-factor sign-in, an authenticator app works offline. Its codes come from a shared secret and the clock10, so they don’t wait for a text to reach a roaming number.
  • Save offline maps and booking confirmations, in case social media slows down at the wrong moment.

Where Kilobat helps

Kilobat checks your connection and the service to help you investigate what may be wrong.

  • Is it them or me, or blocked here? Kilobat checks your connection and the service’s status page. It may identify signs of a network block or a service’s own regional refusal; results can be inconclusive. See blocked here, not down and “not available in your region” answers.
  • Hotel Wi-Fi sign-in. Kilobat can notice a sign-in page and offers a button to open it. With Pro, it can warn before a session expires once it has learned its usual length. See hotel Wi-Fi login on a Mac.
  • Leak test. The VPN leak test checks for selected DNS, IPv6 and UDP leaks. Passing these checks does not prove that all traffic uses the VPN. See proxies and VPNs.
  • Hotspot data saver and data packs. The Travel profile holds back backups and updaters on your phone’s hotspot, and a budget that starts over only when you reset it matches a tourist line’s data. See save hotspot data.
  • Call reports. After each call, Kilobat says whether it froze and why. See video calls and Kilobat for digital nomads.

Questions

Do I need to register my phone’s IMEI as a tourist in Turkey?

BTK requires registration within 120 days of entry for a phone brought from abroad; unregistered phones are cut off after that1. Most short holidays end well before the deadline.

Is Discord blocked in Turkey?

Yes. It has been blocked since 9 October 2024 after a court ruling5. In June 2026 the minister said it would probably reopen in time, but gave no date7.
