What is wifip2pd?

wifip2pd manages the Mac's peer-to-peer Wi-Fi. AirDrop and other features use this direct link between nearby devices. It shows up as the awdl0 interface, not as internet traffic.

Short answer

Part of macOS. It manages peer-to-peer Wi-Fi, the direct link that AirDrop and other nearby-device features use.

Block with care

You can't block it with a firewall, because it isn't internet traffic. To stop its link for a while, turn off AirDrop; Kilobat can pause it for you.

What it is

The man page calls wifip2pd the “Daemon responsible for managing peer-to-peer Wi-Fi discovery and data links”. It configures the Wi-Fi interface to work over peer-to-peer protocols.

The program is /usr/libexec/wifip2pd. launchd starts it for the system as com.apple.wifip2pd. The man page says that it has no options and that users should not run it manually.

Apple Platform Security says that AirDrop uses Apple-created peer-to-peer Wi-Fi to talk directly between devices, without an access point.

Why it uses the network

  • Discovery of nearby devices. Nearby Apple devices find each other and answer over peer-to-peer Wi-Fi, after a Bluetooth signal.
  • Direct data links. When a transfer starts, the data goes over the peer-to-peer link, not through your router or the internet.

How much is normal

wifip2pd itself moves little data. The bytes of a transfer belong to the feature that uses the link: AirDrop is under sharingd.

The awdl0 interface in ifconfig is normal on every Mac with Wi-Fi.

Kilobat counts this traffic as local and shows it apart from internet traffic.

When it uses a lot, and why

  • An AirDrop transfer. The link carries the whole transfer while it runs.
  • Latency spikes, not data. While the radio serves the peer-to-peer link, it spends some time away from your Wi-Fi network. Calls and games can then show regular spikes. See AirDrop, AWDL and latency spikes in games and calls.

Is it safe to block?

Block with care

You can't block it with a firewall, because it isn't internet traffic. To stop its link for a while, turn off AirDrop; Kilobat can pause it for you.

What breaks if you block it

  • AirDrop can't find or send to nearby devices.
  • Other features that use the peer-to-peer link between nearby devices may stop.

Blocking means a firewall rule that refuses its connections. Don’t quit or disable a macOS process to save data: macOS starts it again, and other features depend on it.

Reduce its use

  1. Open Control Center and click AirDrop. Turn AirDrop off while you are on a call or playing.

  2. Turn it on again when you need to send a file.

  3. For the background, read AirDrop, AWDL and latency spikes in games and calls.

  4. Don't quit wifip2pd in Activity Monitor. macOS starts it again.

See how much it uses

  1. In Terminal, show the peer-to-peer interface. status: active means the link is in use.

    ifconfig awdl0
  2. Run Kilobat's stutter test during a call. It says whether spikes repeat at a regular interval.

    kilobat stutter

With Kilobat

  1. The Wi-Fi menu shows whether the AirDrop link is active and what uses it.

  2. The low-latency pause turns off AirDrop for 15 minutes, 1 or 2 hours, or until an app quits. It shows a before and after comparison.

    kilobat low-latency on
  3. Ask the same question in Terminal.

    kilobat explain wifip2pd

The live view and the explanations are free. History in the app needs Kilobat Pro. Blocking needs Pro and the network filter: see the network filter, Protection and the hotspot data saver.

What isn’t documented

Apple doesn't list every feature that uses the peer-to-peer link. The man page describes only its job.

Questions

Is awdl0 a sign that someone is on my Mac?

No. It is the peer-to-peer Wi-Fi interface that macOS creates for AirDrop and other nearby features.

Does turning off AirDrop stop the latency spikes?

It stops AirDrop's use of the link. Kilobat's low-latency pause does this for a set time and compares the spikes before and after.
