Hotspots and data

How much data does Time Machine use on a Mac?

Time Machine data use depends on what you do and the settings you choose. Check a real session before relying on an estimate.

Applies to: Mac computers; app settings and features can change with app versions.Checked: 2 November 2026

When to check

  • You want to use Time Machine on a hotspot or limited connection.
  • The data allowance is falling faster than expected.

How much data it uses

  • What the provider says. A directly connected backup disk uses no internet data for the backup. A network backup to another Mac or compatible NAS moves data over the local network.
  • Why your total differs. The amount depends on the files changed and the destination. Local network traffic and internet traffic are separate.

Measure a session

  1. Open Activity Monitor and choose Network. Sort by Sent Bytes or Rcvd Bytes.

  2. Compare the counters before and after the task. System services can share work across processes.

  3. A backup to a disk on your local network stays local. A remote destination can use internet data.

Reduce data use

  1. Use the Time Machine menu to check progress or skip a backup. Resume backups promptly.

  2. Use a short test on the same connection to compare before and after.

With Kilobat

  1. Kilobat shows local network traffic apart from internet data in the usage view.

  2. Compare local traffic with app bandwidth and hotspot data.

Questions

Is there a fixed Time Machine data cost per hour?

No. Settings and activity change the amount. Provider figures are estimates or rates, not your carrier bill.

Does a Mac show all hotspot traffic?

No. Other devices and the phone can also use the allowance. Compare with the carrier total.
