Hotspots and data

How much data does Netflix use on a Mac?

Netflix data use depends on what you do and the settings you choose. Check a real session before relying on an estimate.

Applies to: Mac computers; app settings and features can change with app versions.Checked: 2 November 2026

When to check

  • You want to use Netflix on a hotspot or limited connection.
  • The data allowance is falling faster than expected.

How much data it uses

  • What the provider says. Netflix says each device can use up to 0.3 GB an hour on Low and 0.7 GB on Medium. On High it lists up to 1 GB for SD, 3 GB for HD and 7 GB for 4K. These are upper estimates, not fixed amounts.
  • Why your total differs. The selected playback setting, video quality and viewing time affect the total.

Measure a session

  1. Open Activity Monitor, choose Network, and find the process for Netflix or its browser.

  2. Note Sent Bytes and Rcvd Bytes before and after a session. Add their changes for a rough total.

  3. Activity Monitor counts processes, not individual browser tabs. Other activity in the same browser affects the result.

  4. A process restart resets its counters. A service can also use helper processes that need separate checks.

Reduce data use

  1. In Netflix Account, choose Profiles, select a profile, then Playback settings. Choose a lower data setting.

  2. Use a short test on the same connection to compare before and after.

With Kilobat

  1. Open Kilobat to see traffic for apps on this Mac. Browser activity appears under the browser.

  2. See which app uses bandwidth and background hotspot data.

Questions

Is there a fixed Netflix data cost per hour?

No. Settings and activity change the amount. Provider figures are estimates or rates, not your carrier bill.

Does a Mac show all hotspot traffic?

No. Other devices and the phone can also use the allowance. Compare with the carrier total.
