Hotspots and data
How much data does FaceTime use on a Mac?
FaceTime data use depends on what you do and the settings you choose. Check a real session before relying on an estimate.
When to check
- You want to use FaceTime on a hotspot or limited connection.
- The data allowance is falling faster than expected.
How much data it uses
- What the provider says. Apple says FaceTime calls over Wi-Fi require a broadband connection. Its support page does not give a fixed hourly data total.
- Why your total differs. Call duration, audio or video, and the conditions of the call change data use.
Measure a session
Open Activity Monitor, choose Network, and look for FaceTime and related processes.
Note Sent Bytes and Rcvd Bytes before and after a session. Add their changes for a rough total.
Activity Monitor counts processes, not individual browser tabs. Other activity in the same browser affects the result.
A process restart resets its counters. A service can also use helper processes that need separate checks.
Reduce data use
Start a FaceTime audio call when video is not needed. Compare the data used during a short call.
Use a short test on the same connection to compare before and after.
With Kilobat
Open Kilobat to see traffic for apps and processes on this Mac. System work can appear under a helper process.
Questions
Is there a fixed FaceTime data cost per hour?
No. Settings and activity change the amount. Provider figures are estimates or rates, not your carrier bill.
Does a Mac show all hotspot traffic?
No. Other devices and the phone can also use the allowance. Compare with the carrier total.
