Wi-Fi it needs
The Australian MSS315 product specifications call for an existing 2.4 GHz network. They list 802.11b/g/n and WPA-PSK or WPA2-PSK.
The same specifications also list WEP, but a modern protected network is preferable. Meross says enterprise Wi-Fi is not supported for that model.
The US Matter product page calls for a 2.4 GHz network, IPv6 and a Matter-compatible hub for the chosen platform. Check requirements for the specific regional model and platform.
A combined network name can carry more than one band. If setup fails, verify that 2.4 GHz is available rather than assuming the plug uses 5 GHz.
Set it up
Meross describes adding the Matter plug in its own app or in a supported home platform. The platform may require a compatible hub and current software.
Connect the phone to the intended 2.4 GHz network.
Install or update the Meross app.
Power the plug and open the app.
Tap + on the home page and select the Matter device.
Follow the app wizard and scan or enter the Matter setup code when requested.
Complete the home platform prompts and confirm the plug appears.
Meross says its iOS setup directs the user through Apple Home, while Android setup uses Google Home. Follow the current app prompts.
How much data it uses
The manufacturer describes live and historical electrical usage in the Meross app. Those readings do not measure the household’s internet allowance.
If the router provides per-device network counters, consult those for traffic sent by the plug itself.
The cited Meross product pages do not publish the plug’s daily network traffic. Its energy monitor measures connected electrical consumption, not internet data.
Guest, hotel and dorm Wi-Fi
Matter setup needs the controller and plug to discover and communicate with each other. A guest network can restrict local communication.
The US product page requires an IPv6 network and a Matter-compatible platform hub. Ask the network operator whether those requirements and local discovery are available.
The cited product instructions do not promise support for a hotel sign-in page. Use the documented home network requirements rather than assuming captive portal support.
When it won’t connect
Check power, network and platform requirements before resetting a device. A reset can remove its existing pairing.
Confirm the plug has power.
Check that the 2.4 GHz network is available.
Check the phone and platform hub meet Meross’s version requirements.
Enable the app permissions requested during Matter setup.
Try the current Meross setup wizard again.
Use the troubleshooting guidance for your home platform if pairing fails.
Contact Meross Support if the plug still cannot be added.
Meross describes a five-second button hold for a factory reset. Record your setup information and consult its guide before using it.
When it keeps going offline
An unresponsive plug can reflect a Wi-Fi, hub or platform problem. Check the power and connection before changing the configuration.
Check that the outlet supplying the plug has power.
Check that the router’s 2.4 GHz network is working.
Move the plug closer to the router for a comparison.
Check the home platform hub is online.
Open the Meross app and check for a firmware update.
Follow Meross’s Matter troubleshooting if the plug remains unresponsive.
Restarting a shared router interrupts other users. Coordinate that step before trying it.

See your network from your Mac
Kilobat is a Mac menu-bar app with a CLI and an MCP server for AI agents. It lists the devices on your Wi-Fi and says when a new one joins, keeps a history of the router’s and the internet’s health, scans nearby channels, and shows which app on your Mac is using the network. Read the docs.
