Insta360 X4 Wi-Fi: connect the app and transfer files
The X4 creates a Wi-Fi connection for its phone app. That local connection is different from an internet connection.
- Wi-Fi
- 5 GHz camera Wi-Fi by default. Insta360 documentation differs on automatic 2.4 GHz fallback.
- Security
- Camera password is shown in its Wi-Fi Settings; encryption type not documented in the cited instructions.

Wi-Fi it needs
The camera broadcasts its own network for the phone to join. Bluetooth helps the app identify the camera; it does not replace the Wi-Fi connection.
Insta360 lists 802.11a/n/ac at 5 GHz and says the X4 broadcasts at 5 GHz by default. Its X4 specifications describe an automatic 2.4 GHz fallback in some conditions, but its newer X-series troubleshooting says the cameras cannot switch to 2.4 GHz. Confirm behaviour with Insta360 for your firmware and region.
The X4 specifications say users cannot manually switch frequencies. Check that the phone supports 5 GHz 802.11ac when the camera is not visible.
Set it up
The first connection needs confirmation on the camera screen. Insta360 says activation is needed before first use.
Install the Insta360 app on your phone.
Turn on the X4 and enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on the phone.
Open the app and tap the camera icon.
Select the X4 and follow the connection prompts.
Confirm the first connection on the camera screen.
Follow the app prompts to activate the camera.
Find its password
Swipe down from the top of the camera screen.
Open Settings › Wi-Fi Settings › Password.
If the app connection fails, select the camera network in phone Wi-Fi settings.
Enter the password shown on the camera.
How much data it uses
A wireless transfer copies selected footage from the camera to the phone. It is local traffic; it is not an upload to an internet service.
In the app, open the album and select files. Insta360 describes downloading 360° footage to the app album and exporting flat video. The manual says not to lock the phone or leave the app while exporting.
Insta360 quotes an app download speed of approximately 30 MB/s in an interference-free environment. Actual transfer speed depends on conditions and the devices used.
For a wired alternative, the manual describes using the supplied USB-C cable. On a computer, select USB Drive Mode on the camera and copy files from the DCIM folder.
Insta360 does not publish a universal data amount per hour of footage in the cited transfer instructions. File size varies with recording settings.
Guest, hotel and dorm Wi-Fi
The camera-to-phone connection does not require a hotel Wi-Fi network. The phone may temporarily use the camera network instead of its normal internet connection.
For the camera’s separate Insta360+ cloud connection, Insta360 lists WPA3 support for the X4. Its public Wi-Fi compatibility varies by network type; password-protected networks requiring an additional sign-in are unsupported.
A hidden network is also unsupported in that guide. Ask the network operator before changing shared network settings.
When it won’t connect
Start with the camera’s connection screen and the app’s documented troubleshooting. Check the instructions for the exact error shown.
Open the camera Wi-Fi settings and check for an error.
Enable Wi-Fi on the camera and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on the phone.
Update the camera firmware and the Insta360 app.
Restart the camera and phone.
Check the app has the phone permissions requested in Insta360’s guide.
If the app cannot connect, join the camera network manually with its displayed password.
Try a second compatible phone to narrow down the cause.
When it keeps going offline
When a transfer stops, check the local connection first. A camera network without internet is not necessarily a fault.
Keep the phone and camera close together.
Keep the app open and the phone unlocked during export.
Reconnect to the camera network if the phone switched away.
Check the available storage on the phone.
Try a wired transfer if the wireless transfer remains unreliable.
Contact Insta360 Support if its error-specific steps do not help.
Back up media before a factory reset. Follow Insta360’s model-specific instructions.
Questions

Insta360 describes the camera-to-device connection as local file transfer, not an internet connection.
Where is the X4 Wi-Fi password?
Swipe down on the camera and open Settings › Wi-Fi Settings › Password.
Can the X4 transfer files to a Mac?
Yes. Insta360 documents copying files over a USB-C data cable in USB Drive Mode.

See your network from your Mac
Kilobat is a Mac menu-bar app with a CLI and an MCP server for AI agents. It lists the devices on your Wi-Fi and says when a new one joins, keeps a history of the router’s and the internet’s health, scans nearby channels, and shows which app on your Mac is using the network. Read the docs.
