Is this network metered? Mark each network Metered or Unmetered, or let macOS decide. Kilobat holds back its own speed tests on metered ones.
For digital nomads
Work from anywhere. Know the network first.
A new café, a new coworking space, a phone hotspot at the airport. Kilobat tells you within seconds whether the Wi-Fi will hold a call, and keeps your Mac from eating your data plan.

Every network is a new problem
- Login pages. Café and hotel Wi-Fi often hide everything behind a captive portal; Kilobat spots it and opens the login page.
- Hotspots and eSIM data. Photos, backups and updates can burn a week’s data in an hour.
- Calls that freeze. Fast downloads, jittery ping: the call drops while the speed test looks fine.
- VPNs. Is your traffic going through the tunnel, partly, or not at all?
How Kilobat helps
Check before the call
A speed test says whether voice and video calls will hold up, and the stutter test catches spikes. Free.
Save hotspot data
Mark a network as metered, set a budget, and Travel keeps everything but the apps you choose offline. Updaters wait until you’re back on Wi-Fi. Pro.
See where traffic leaves
Health shows whether a VPN carries everything, only some traffic, or nothing. Free.
Prove it to the host
The report button makes a summary of outages, latency and speed tests to show the café, coworking space or your provider. Free.
Find the good seat
Signal radar scores the Wi-Fi as you move with your laptop and tells you when you’ve found the best spot. Kilobat also keeps the Mac awake through long uploads and agent runs, even with the lid closed when you allow it. Radar and the lid-closed hold are part of Pro.
Questions
Does it know when I’m on a hotspot?
macOS flags iPhone hotspots as metered. Mark any other network, such as an Android hotspot, a travel router or a pocket Wi-Fi, as metered once, and Kilobat remembers it.
Does it work with my VPN?
Yes. Kilobat reads the routes on your Mac to show whether the VPN carries all, some or none of your traffic, and checks sites through the tunnel and directly.
Is it free?
Live traffic, speed and stutter tests, the VPN view and the provider report are free. Travel, budgets, radar and history are part of Pro, $19 once, with a 7-day free trial. Students get Pro free.
