Wi-Fi says “No Internet Connection” on Mac

macOS shows “No Internet Connection” under a Wi-Fi network when the Mac joined the network but cannot reach the internet through it.

Applies to: macOS 13 Ventura and later. The text was checked in WiFiSettingsKit on macOS 27.2.Checked: 29 October 2026

Symptoms

  • The Wi-Fi menu shows “No Internet Connection” under the network name.
  • Wi-Fi settings show the same text.
  • VoiceOver reads the signal strength, then “No Internet Connection”.

Likely causes

  • A Wi-Fi login page. Hotel, café and airport networks hold traffic until you sign in. See Wi-Fi login page does not appear on a Mac.
  • The router has no internet. The router's link to the provider is down.
  • No valid address. The Mac did not get an address from the router. See Mac has a self-assigned IP address.
  • A DNS or filter problem. Apple does not document the test that macOS uses for this label. DNS and filters can affect it.

How to check

  1. Open any website. A login page shows that the network needs you to sign in.

  2. Show the address and router of the Wi-Fi service.

    networksetup -getinfo Wi-Fi
  3. Find the router address in the gateway line. Then ping it.

    route -n get default
    ping -c 5 192.168.1.1
  4. Ping an address on the internet. This test does not use DNS.

    ping -c 5 1.1.1.1
  5. Look up a name. If ping works but this fails, DNS is the problem.

    dscacheutil -q host -a name apple.com

How to fix it

  1. Sign in to the login page, if there is one.

  2. Restart the router if other devices on the network also have no internet.

  3. Renew the DHCP lease. See Renew the DHCP lease on a Mac.

  4. Follow the full steps in Mac connected to Wi-Fi but no internet.

With Kilobat

  1. Check Wi-Fi, the router, the internet, DNS and a login page in one command.

    kilobat diagnose
  2. These Kilobat checks are free. AI agents run them through MCP with diagnose_connection and diagnose_network. See Find why one site or API won't connect.

Questions

Does the label mean that my Wi-Fi is broken?

No. The Wi-Fi link works. The internet behind the router, a login page or the address is the problem.
