Safari: “You Are Not Connected to the Internet” on Mac
Safari shows this page when macOS has no internet connection for it. Often Wi-Fi is off, the Mac has no address, or a VPN holds traffic.
Symptoms
- Safari shows the heading “You Are Not Connected to the Internet”.
- Other apps also say that they are offline.
- Wi-Fi shows as connected, but nothing loads.
Likely causes
- Wi-Fi is off or not joined. The Mac is not on any network.
- No valid IP address. The Mac did not get an address from the router. See Mac has a self-assigned IP address.
- The router or the provider has no internet. If other devices also fail, the problem is not the Mac.
- A VPN that blocks traffic. Some VPNs block all traffic while they connect or after they disconnect.
- Another network service comes first. An Ethernet adapter or a tethered phone with no internet can be first in the service order. See Mac uses the wrong network connection.
How to check
Click the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar. Make sure that Wi-Fi is on and that the Mac joined your network.
Show the address, router and subnet of the Wi-Fi service.
networksetup -getinfo Wi-FiShow the network state that apps see. Each interface says if it is reachable.
scutil --nwiFind the router address in the
gatewayline. Then ping it.route -n get default ping -c 5 192.168.1.1Ping an address on the internet. This test does not use DNS.
ping -c 5 1.1.1.1
How to fix it
Turn Wi-Fi off and on in the Wi-Fi menu, or join your network again.
If the address starts with 169.254, renew the DHCP lease. See Renew the DHCP lease on a Mac.
Restart the router if other devices also fail.
Disconnect the VPN, or quit it, for a test.
If the problem continues, use Wireless Diagnostics. See Use Wireless Diagnostics and wdutil on a Mac.
With Kilobat

Questions
Why does Safari say this when Wi-Fi has full bars?
Full bars show a good link to the router. The router, the address or a VPN can still stop internet access. See Mac connected to Wi-Fi but no internet.
