What is fileproviderd on Mac?

fileproviderd connects cloud storage apps to the files in the Finder. To reduce the sync traffic, pause the cloud storage app.

Process: fileproviderdApplies to: All current macOS versions. Seen on macOS 27.2.Checked: 29 October 2026

Where you see it

  • fileproviderd is in the list in Activity Monitor › Network, in nettop or in Kilobat.
  • A firewall or network monitor asks if fileproviderd can connect.
  • A cloud storage app syncs, and fileproviderd is busy at the same time.

What it is

The man page says that fileproviderd controls “the interaction between extensions and filecoordinationd”. It also coordinates the listing of files and their properties.

Apple's File Provider framework lets an app show files that it syncs with remote storage. iCloud Drive and many other cloud storage apps use it.

Why it uses the network

  • Files that a cloud app syncs. When the Finder or an app opens a file that is only in the cloud, the provider downloads it.
  • Changes to files. When you change a file, the provider uploads the change.

Is it normal?

Yes, when a cloud storage app syncs. Each provider app also moves data in its own processes. Look at both.

Apple does not document how much traffic goes through fileproviderd and how much through the provider app.

See how much it uses

  1. Open Activity Monitor from Applications > Utilities. Click Network.

  2. Type fileproviderd in the search field. The Sent Bytes and Rcvd Bytes columns show what it moved.

  3. In Terminal, watch only this process. Press d to show the change per second, and q to quit.

    nettop -p fileproviderd -P
  4. In the same list, look at the cloud storage app, for example Dropbox or Google Drive. Compare their bytes.

Reduce or pause it safely

  1. Pause sync in the cloud storage app. Use the app's menu bar item or its settings.

  2. Choose which folders the app keeps on this Mac. Most cloud storage apps can keep files online only.

  3. For iCloud Drive, use the iCloud settings. See What is bird on Mac?.

  4. Do not quit fileproviderd in Activity Monitor. It is part of macOS, and other features depend on it. The Finder needs it to show cloud files.

With Kilobat

  1. Open the Kilobat app list and search for fileproviderd. Its row shows the live rate and the bytes it moved.

  2. Kilobat puts this service in the System downloads group, with one line about what it does. Expand the group to see each service.

  3. With the network filter on, click the service. The panel names the apps that the downloads were for, for example “For Music”.

  4. Without the filter, macOS shows only the service. Then Kilobat cannot say which app a download was for.

  5. In Terminal, see the same live list. Press / and type the name to search.

    kilobat status --watch
  6. Show its traffic over one day. Names match kilobat report --summary.

    kilobat bandwidth fileproviderd day
  7. Through MCP, an AI agent gets the same history with get_app_bandwidth and the name fileproviderd.

  8. The live view is free. History in the app needs Pro. Kilobat records history only while the app runs.
