Slow internet on a Mac: find which part is slow

A slow connection has many possible causes. Test each part of the path in order: the Wi-Fi link, the router, the internet, DNS and the other apps.

Applies to: macOS 12 Monterey and later for networkQuality. The other commands work on all current macOS versions.Checked: 29 October 2026

Symptoms

  • Pages start slowly or load slowly.
  • Downloads are slower than your plan.
  • Video calls freeze while other devices use the network.
  • The connection is slow only in some rooms or at some times.

Likely causes

  • A weak or crowded Wi-Fi link. Distance, walls and nearby networks lower the speed between the Mac and the router.
  • A busy router or network. Other devices that upload or download share the same connection.
  • The internet provider or the route. Congestion past your router adds latency and limits speed.
  • Slow DNS. Slow name lookups make every new site start slowly.
  • Apps on the Mac. Backups, cloud sync and updates use the connection in the background.

How to check

  1. Find the address of your router. It is the gateway line.

    route -n get default
  2. Ping the router 20 times. Replace the address with your gateway address.

    ping -c 20 192.168.1.1

Output A summary with packet loss and the minimum, average and maximum round-trip times.

  3. Ping a server on the internet 20 times.

    ping -c 20 1.1.1.1
  4. Compare the two results. High times or loss to the router point to Wi-Fi or the router. Good router times and poor internet times point past the router.

  5. Measure capacity and responsiveness. This test uses data.

    networkQuality
  6. Look for apps that use the connection. See Find which app uses your bandwidth on a Mac.

  7. Connect the Mac with an Ethernet cable, if you can. Test again. If it is fast now, the Wi-Fi link is the problem.

How to fix it

  1. If the Wi-Fi link is weak, move closer to the router or remove obstacles. See Weak Wi-Fi signal on a Mac.

  2. If many networks share your channel, change the channel in the router settings. See Crowded Wi-Fi channels near your Mac.

  3. If latency rises a lot while the network is busy, read Bufferbloat: calls lag when the network is busy.

  4. If DNS is slow, read Slow DNS on a Mac.

  5. Pause or schedule large backups and sync while you need the connection.

  6. If the internet test is poor with a good router test, contact your provider. Give them your ping and networkQuality results.

With Kilobat

  1. One command checks the Wi-Fi signal, the router, the internet, DNS and captive portals. It names the slow part.

    kilobat diagnose

Output A health verdict (good, degraded, poor or unknown), the measurements and advice.

  2. In the app, open the Health tab. It shows signal, router and internet latency. The advice on the slow part needs Pro.

  3. A speed test shows speed, latency under load and verdicts for calls and streaming. It uses up to 80 MB.

    kilobat speedtest --budget-mb 20
  4. kilobat status --watch shows live traffic for each app. It is free.

Questions

Why is my speed test fast but pages still slow?

Page loads depend on latency and DNS, not only on capacity. Compare the ping times and the DNS lookup time.

Why does ping to my router show loss when everything works?

Some routers give a low priority to ping replies. Look at the loss to the internet server too, and test over Ethernet.
