See if traffic goes through your VPN

Kilobat reads the Mac's routes to show whether traffic leaves through a VPN. It asks Cloudflare for your public IP only if you turn that on.

Free in the app and the CLIChecked: 29 October 2026

In the app

  1. Open the dashboard and click the Health tab. Find Where traffic leaves.

  2. Read the interface and the VPN state. Split means that a VPN is connected but only some traffic uses it.

  3. To see your public IP, select Look up public IP. Kilobat then asks Cloudflare on network changes and every 30 minutes.

  4. To show the VPN state next to the bat, open Settings › Menu bar and select VPN.

  5. The History tab lists when a VPN went on or off, and when the public IP changed.

With the CLI

  1. Show where traffic leaves. Nothing leaves your Mac for this.

    kilobat ip

Output For example: Traffic leaves through utun3 (WireGuard).

  2. Also ask Cloudflare for your public IP and its registry country.

    kilobat ip --public
  3. Show the VPN state in the menu bar.

    kilobat settings menu-bar vpn

Through MCP

Connect the MCP server once with claude mcp add kilobat -- kilobat mcp. For other clients, see the docs. Then an agent can call these tools. Tools that change settings tell the agent to ask you first.

Tool and argumentsWhat it does
get_exit_pathReturns interface, vpn (full, partial or off) and vpnName. Nothing is sent anywhere.
get_exit_path
{"public_ip": true}
Also returns publicIP and publicIPCountry. This contacts Cloudflare.

Good to know

  • The country is where the address is registered, from DB-IP data in the app. It is not where you or the server are.
  • A VPN or an exit country does not show that your connection is private or anonymous.
  • Cloudflare sees the lookup request, as any website that you visit would.
  • With a system proxy, the public IP is the address of the proxy.
  • If macOS lists several VPNs as connected, Kilobat does not guess which one carries the route.
