Step by step

## How to connect to GWR Wi-Fi on a Mac

1. Search for `GWR WiFi` in your Wi-Fi settings and select **Connect**.
2. Open your browser. The GWR Wi-Fi registration page should load automatically.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions to activate your free Wi-Fi.

Apps or document syncing running in the background can slow your connection, GWR says.

A VPN, iCloud Private Relay or your own DNS can hide the sign-in page. Kilobat notices the network is waiting and opens the page in one click. Turn the VPN on again once you’re signed in.

## Who gets GWR Wi-Fi, and what it costs

- GWR says Wi-Fi on its trains is free, with no paid tier.
- Its terms say the service is free, though calls to the support line may be charged.
- GWR’s Wi-Fi page doesn’t say anything about differences between classes.
- Some GWR stations also offer free GWR Wi-Fi.

As of November 2026.

Coverage

## Where GWR Wi-Fi works, and where it drops

1. GWR Wi-Fi uses data from the mobile phone network, from Paddington to Penzance and Southampton to Swansea.
2. GWR says the service depends on a good mobile signal, so it can’t guarantee full service all the time.
3. There will be interruptions in tunnels, cuttings and other places that block mobile signals.
4. Icomera provides the Wi-Fi on class 150, 158, 175, 230 and 387 trains.
5. Nomad provides it on the 80x and 16x fleets and on the Sleeper.
6. Because the Wi-Fi is on the trains, you may pick it up near a GWR train, such as in a station.

The rules

## Data limits, streaming and VPNs on GWR

### Limits and streaming

GWR applies a fair-use traffic management policy that restricts streaming on board. It suggests downloading TV and films before you travel. GWR may restrict specific websites or content types. It doesn’t publish a data cap, time limit or device limit.

### VPNs

GWR says it cannot guarantee that any particular VPN will be compatible with the service.

Tips

## Before you board

1. 1

Download films and shows before you travel, since streaming is restricted.
2. 2

   On a 150, 158, 175, 230 or 387, email `GWR.support@icomera.com` or call 020 8028 0378.
3. 3

   On an 80x, 16x or Sleeper, email `GWR-OTS@nomadrail.com` or call 0330 088 1275.

## GWR Wi-Fi on the complaint board

On board with Kilobat

## Make a shared train link go further

Kilobat is a Mac menu-bar app that shows what each app sends and holds back what can wait. On GWR Wi-Fi on board:

- **The sign-in page.** When it doesn’t open by itself, the menu bar says **This Wi-Fi wants you to sign in**, with **Open sign-in page**. Turn your VPN on again after you’ve signed in. Free:
- **Why it can’t connect.** When a VPN, iCloud Private Relay or custom DNS hides the sign-in page, Kilobat names the layer that broke: VPN, DNS or the network. Free:
- **See what’s using it.** Every app’s upload and download, live in the menu bar, so you know which one is taking the shared link. Free:
- **Mark it metered.** macOS treats train Wi-Fi as unlimited. Mark it **Metered** and Kilobat skips its own speed tests; with automatic switching, Travel blocks backups and the like on that network. Pro:
- **Send later.** A big upload, such as Dropbox syncing a folder, can wait until you’re on unmetered Wi-Fi again, for up to eight hours while Kilobat is open. Pro:

[Download for Mac ↓](https://kilobat.app/downloads/Kilobat-1.33.1.dmg?via=site)

```
brew install seifip/kilobat/kilobat
```

Pro is $29 once for two Macs, with a 7-day free trial and 14-day refunds. More in [saving hotspot data](https://kilobat.app/save-hotspot-data).

**What is eating your bandwidth?** Live traffic for every app, right in your menu bar. Catch the backup choking your call.

**Hotspot data gone in an hour?** Travel blocks backups, and updaters wait until you’re off the hotspot. The apps keep working.

## Questions

**Is GWR Wi-Fi free?**

Yes. GWR says its onboard Wi-Fi is free. Only calls to the support line may cost money.

**Can I stream on GWR Wi-Fi?**

GWR’s fair-use policy restricts streaming on board, so download video before you travel.

**Why does GWR Wi-Fi drop out?**

It relies on mobile signal, so tunnels and cuttings cause gaps. Speed also depends on how many people are online.

**What is the GWR Wi-Fi network called?**

GWR names its network `GWR WiFi`. Join it, then sign in on the page that opens.

**Can you use a VPN on GWR Wi-Fi?**

GWR says it cannot guarantee that any particular VPN will be compatible with the service.

**Why won’t the GWR Wi-Fi sign-in page open on my Mac?**

A VPN, iCloud Private Relay or your own DNS can keep the page from opening. Turn them off, open `http://captive.apple.com` in Safari, and turn the VPN on again after you’ve signed in. Kilobat shows **Open sign-in page** when a network is waiting for you.
