Step by step

## How to connect to Deutsche Bahn ICE Wi-Fi on a Mac

1. Turn on Wi-Fi on your device.
2. Select the `WIFIonICE` network.
3. A login page opens on some devices. If not, type `LogIn.WIFIonICE.de` into your browser.

## Who gets Deutsche Bahn ICE Wi-Fi, and what it costs

- DB says Wi-Fi is free in both first and second class.
- In first class it is set up for VPN connections, large email attachments, and short videos and music streams.
- In second class it is set up for surfing, email and chat. VPN connections are also possible.
- You can connect as many devices as you like at once, with no time limit on the journey.

As of November 2026.

Coverage

## Where Deutsche Bahn ICE Wi-Fi works, and where it drops

1. Wi-Fi is on all ICE trains, some IC trains and selected regional trains. DB is rolling it out across its whole long-distance fleet.
2. Intercity trains use the same `WIFIonICE` network name and login as the ICE.
3. It works across borders on trips to Austria, Switzerland, France, Belgium and the Netherlands.
4. DB uses multiprovider technology that uses all available mobile networks along the line in parallel, at up to 300 km/h.
5. In tunnels, internet only works where mobile operators cover the tunnel. DB says this is partly still unsatisfactory. The on-board ICE Portal keeps working.
6. The ICE Portal’s **Connectivity Radar** shows the expected connection on the next stretch, from “Fast internet” to “No internet”.

The rules

## Data limits, streaming and VPNs on Deutsche Bahn ICE

### Limits and streaming

DB doesn’t publish a data cap or throttling rule. Speed depends on the mobile networks and how many passengers are online. DB asks you to avoid app and system updates, downloads and high-definition films.

### VPNs

DB says VPN connections are possible in first and second class, and recommends a VPN or https sites. The ICE Portal may not load over a VPN, so turn it off to use the portal.

Tips

## Before you board

1. 1

   Download videos before you travel, or use the ICE Portal, as DB suggests.
2. 2

   Check the **Connectivity Radar** on the ICE Portal before a video call.

On board with Kilobat

## Make a shared train link go further

Kilobat is a Mac menu-bar app that shows what each app sends and holds back what can wait. On Deutsche Bahn ICE Wi-Fi on board:

- **The sign-in page.** When it doesn’t open by itself, the menu bar says **This Wi-Fi wants you to sign in**, with **Open sign-in page**. Turn your VPN on again after you’ve signed in. Free:
- **Why it can’t connect.** When a VPN, iCloud Private Relay or custom DNS hides the sign-in page, Kilobat names the layer that broke: VPN, DNS or the network. Free:
- **See what’s using it.** Every app’s upload and download, live in the menu bar, so you know which one is taking the shared link. Free:
- **Mark it metered.** macOS treats train Wi-Fi as unlimited. Mark it **Metered** and Kilobat skips its own speed tests; with automatic switching, Travel blocks backups and the like on that network. Pro:
- **Send later.** A big upload, such as Dropbox syncing a folder, can wait until you’re on unmetered Wi-Fi again, for up to eight hours while Kilobat is open. Pro:

[Download for Mac ↓](https://kilobat.app/downloads/Kilobat-1.33.1.dmg?via=site)

```
brew install seifip/kilobat/kilobat
```

Pro is $29 once for two Macs, with a 7-day free trial and 14-day refunds. More in [saving hotspot data](https://kilobat.app/save-hotspot-data).

**What is eating your bandwidth?** Live traffic for every app, right in your menu bar. Catch the backup choking your call.

**Hotspot data gone in an hour?** Travel blocks backups, and updaters wait until you’re off the hotspot. The apps keep working.

## Questions

**Is there a time limit on WIFIonICE?**

No. DB says there is no time limit throughout the journey.

**Does WIFIonICE work outside Germany?**

Yes, on trips to Austria, Switzerland, France, Belgium and the Netherlands.

**What is the Deutsche Bahn ICE Wi-Fi network called?**

Deutsche Bahn (ICE) names its network `WIFIonICE`. Join it, then sign in on the page that opens.

**Can you use a VPN on Deutsche Bahn ICE Wi-Fi?**

**Why won’t the Deutsche Bahn ICE Wi-Fi sign-in page open on my Mac?**

A VPN, iCloud Private Relay or your own DNS can keep the page from opening. Turn them off, open `http://captive.apple.com` in Safari, and turn the VPN on again after you’ve signed in. Kilobat shows **Open sign-in page** when a network is waiting for you.
