# HughesNet: Priority Data, Standard Data, latency and the System Control Center

HughesNet is Hughes’ satellite home internet, over geostationary satellites such as JUPITER 3. Hughes describes Priority Data followed by unlimited Standard Data, which may slow during peak traffic.

Geostationary

## At a glance

| | |
|---|---|
| Orbit | Geostationary, with Fusion plans that add a wireless link for latency. |
| Typical latency | Ask Hughes for your service’s typical latency. Viasat describes roughly 600 ms for geostationary links. |
| Data | A monthly amount of Priority Data, then unlimited Standard Data that may slow during congestion. |
| Modem status page | `www.systemcontrolcenter.com` on the modem’s network (System Control Center). |

## Latency

For traffic carried over HughesNet’s geostationary satellite link, an internet request and its reply each travel between the ground and the satellite. Ask Hughes for a latency figure for your service. For comparison, Viasat, which uses the same orbit, puts it at about 600 ms.

**HughesNet Fusion** blends the satellite with a wireless link to cut that delay. Hughes calls it low-latency and more responsive, without a number.

## Data and fair use

Hughes’ [Fair Access Policy](https://www.hughes.com/legal/hughesnet-fair-access-policy-after-12-19-23), for customers who signed up on or after 19 December 2023:

- After your **Priority Data** allowance, Hughes says service continues with unlimited **Standard Data**, which may be slower during high-traffic periods.
- Hughes offers Priority Data tokens. Check the terms and allowance for your plan.

Check your plan’s Fair Access Policy for the rules that apply to you.

## Router and dish

The modem’s status pages are the **System Control Center**. On a device connected to the modem, open `www.systemcontrolcenter.com`. Hughes’ HT3000W user guide describes a status light at the top: green is normal, yellow is working but degraded, orange means you’ve used your plan’s data, and red is a problem. There’s also a connectivity test to Hughes’ network operations centre.

Wi-Fi settings need the admin password, printed on the label on the back of the modem. The Wi-Fi name and password are on the same label.

## Known quirks

- **High baseline latency.** A high baseline ping is normal on a geostationary satellite path. Fusion also uses a wireless link; compare your own measurements with their usual range.
- **Orange means data, not a fault.** On the HT3000W System Control Center, Hughes says an orange indicator means you have exceeded your service plan data.

## Check with your provider

Ask about these details for your service:

- Your plan’s Priority Data amount and typical latency; check the label for your address.
- Whether your service shares public IPv4 addresses (CGNAT), and whether it offers IPv6 or port forwarding.
- Which traffic Fusion sends over the wireless link and which over the satellite.

## With Kilobat

Kilobat measures a HughesNet link from your Mac: ping to the modem or your own router, and to the internet, about once a minute in the background, and each outage with whether your router kept answering. On a geostationary satellite path, internet latency can be high, so Health may call the path past the router slow; compare it with your usual level. Fusion also uses a wireless link.

For Priority Data, mark the network **Metered**, set a budget that starts over on your billing day, and let updaters wait. Kilobat holds them back on metered networks; check your plan terms before scheduling large downloads. Compare Hughes’ usage figure with Kilobat’s in History › Compare with your router or provider.

## Questions

**Does HughesNet have a data cap?**

Hughes says service continues on unlimited Standard Data after Priority Data runs out, potentially slower during peak traffic. Check your plan terms.

**What is the System Control Center?**

The modem’s own status pages, at www.systemcontrolcenter.com on its network: a status light, system status and information, and a connectivity test.
