# Eutelsat OneWeb: who it’s for, latency and terminals

OneWeb is Eutelsat’s low Earth orbit network: 600+ satellites in 12 orbital planes, 1,200 km up. Eutelsat aims it at businesses, governments, ships and aircraft; Eutelsat also supplies connectivity used by internet providers for homes and businesses.

Low Earth orbit

## At a glance

| | |
|---|---|
| Orbit | Low Earth orbit, 1,200 km, 600+ satellites in 12 planes. |
| Who it’s for | Enterprise, government, maritime, aviation and telecom customers. |
| Typical latency | Eutelsat reported 70 ms average global two-way latency in its 2023–24 report; ask your provider for current measurements. |
| Data | Check the terms of the service package you buy. |
| Terminals | Flat panels such as the Hughes HL1100W and HL1120W, parabolic and maritime terminals, from several makers. |

## Latency

Eutelsat describes OneWeb as low-latency, suited to video calls and real-time applications. Its 2023–24 annual report gives an average global two-way latency of 70 ms; that historical figure is not a guarantee for your connection. Its satellites fly at 1,200 km, about a thirtieth of a geostationary satellite’s height, but height alone does not establish the latency you will see. Ask whoever sells you service for their measured figure.

## Data and fair use

Eutelsat sells OneWeb as service packages that scale with capacity and performance needs, with availability and terms through service providers. The data allowance, any fair-use rule and what happens past it are in your contract with the company that provides your service.

Eutelsat says its GEO satellites, including KONNECT, and its OneWeb LEO constellation support internet services for homes and businesses through telecom operators and ISPs.

## Router and dish

OneWeb terminals come from several makers. The Hughes HL1100W, for example, has an indoor unit with Wi-Fi and Ethernet. Ask your service provider for the terminal’s documentation and any local address or login.

## Known quirks

- **Service packages.** Eutelsat markets OneWeb for organisations, including maritime and aviation customers. Ask a service provider about availability.
- **Many terminals.** Fixed flat panels, vehicle and maritime terminals, and other terminals made for particular uses.

## Check with your provider

Ask about these details for your service:

- Current typical latency for your service package.
- Data allowances, fair-use rules and prices; each provider sets its own.
- Whether customers get a public IPv4 address or share one (CGNAT).
- The terminals’ local admin address and login.

## With Kilobat

On a OneWeb connection, Kilobat measures the link from your Mac like any other: ping to the router and to the internet, outages with whether your router kept answering, the stutter test for short spikes, call reports, and per-app data with budgets if your package has an allowance. It can’t read the terminal itself.
