# Optimum Gateway restart, Wi-Fi password, port forwarding and extenders

The Optimum Gateway is the combined modem and Wi-Fi router Optimum includes with its internet plans. You manage it with your Optimum ID in the My Optimum app or at optimum.net/mynetwork, not on a local admin page.

optimum.net/mynetwork or The My Optimum app

App

My Optimum (iOS, Android and Amazon)

Password

You sign in with your Optimum ID and password. The default Wi-Fi name and password are on the label on the bottom of the Gateway; the password is listed as the **Wi-Fi Pre-Shared Key**.

Models

Gateway 6E, Gateway 6, Gateway 5, Altice One

**Checked 1 November 2026.** Optimum Gateways (Gateway 5 and newer) and the Altice One box with a built-in gateway, as described in Optimum’s help pages in 2026. The app notes that its features depend on your equipment.

## Sign in to the Optimum Gateway

1. Go to `https://www.optimum.net/mynetwork` and sign in with your Optimum ID and password.
2. Your network name and password are under **My WiFi network**.
3. To change them, click **More** in **My WiFi network**, enter the new details and click **Save**.

After changing the Wi-Fi name or password, reconnect every device, including Optimum TV boxes. Forgotten your Optimum ID? Optimum’s ID help page at optimum.net/idhelp resets it.

### In the My Optimum app

1. Open the app and sign in with your Optimum ID.
2. Tap **WiFi**; the network name and password are at the top.
3. Tap to edit them, then tap **SAVE**.

### On an Optimum One or Optimum TV box

1. Press the home button on the remote and select **Settings**.
2. Highlight **Internet**, then select **My Home WiFi**.

## Restart it properly

Every device on your network disconnects while the equipment restarts, which takes about five minutes.

1. In the My Optimum app, tap **WiFi › More options › Manage router settings**.
2. Tap **Restart my Internet equipment**.
3. Wait about five minutes for the internet to come back.

Optimum’s virtual assistant, Allie, can also restart your equipment remotely from the chat on optimum.net.

### Restart by hand

1. Unplug the Gateway’s power cord, and remove the backup battery if you have one.
2. Wait 30 seconds.
3. Plug it back in, reinsert any battery, and try the internet again.

### On an Optimum One or Optimum TV box

1. Press the home button on the remote and select **Settings**.
2. Select **System**, then **INTERNET/WIFI AND PHONE** and **REBOOT**.
3. Or hold the diamond button on the box’s front panel for 10 seconds, until **GW Reset** appears.

### Schedule a restart

Optimum documents no scheduled restart.

**Kilobat can help.** Kilobat Pro’s [router check-up](https://kilobat.app/docs/home-network#router-checkup) learns how fast this router usually answers, says when a restart is due, and checks the next day whether it helped.

## Update the firmware

Optimum’s help pages describe no firmware check or update for its Gateways; the equipment is Optimum’s and it manages it.

## See connected devices

1. In the My Optimum app, tap **WiFi › View my network** to see devices on your Wi-Fi.
2. To rename one, tap the right arrow next to it, rename it and pick a category.
3. Save your changes.
4. To group devices by person, tap **My Account › Manage my household** and create profiles.

Phones and laptops that use a private (random) MAC address may show up as unrecognised devices.

### Pause devices with Advanced Security

Advanced Security, available only on Optimum Gateways and routers, adds profiles, internet pause and schedules.

1. Sign in at optimum.net and open **Advanced Security** from the **Internet** section.
2. Select **Manage Settings**.
3. Assign devices to profiles, then pause a profile or set its schedule.

**Kilobat can help.** Kilobat’s [new-device alerts](https://kilobat.app/docs/home-network#new-devices) tell you when a device you haven’t seen joins your home Wi-Fi. **Tools › Devices** lists what answers on the network, and you can name each one.

## UPnP and port forwarding

Optimum’s help pages for its Gateways don’t mention UPnP or NAT-PMP. Its port management pages cover only port forwarding and port triggering.

An open port lets anyone on the internet reach that device, so forward only what a game or service needs and delete rules you no longer use.

### Port forwarding

1. Go to `https://www.optimum.net/mynetwork` and sign in.
2. At the bottom of the page, select **Port forwarding**, then **Manage**.
3. Select a device and enter a unique rule name.
4. Enter the external and internal ports, choose the protocol and select **Save**.

If the device isn’t listed, go to **Advanced settings › Port management** and select **Add New Port Forwarding Rule**. Optimum recommends locating the device by host name; by IP address, reserve it under **Address Reservation** on the **LAN Setup** page.

### Port triggering

1. At optimum.net/mynetwork, select **Advanced settings** at the bottom of the page.
2. Under **Port Management**, in **Port Triggering**, select **Add New Port Triggering Rule**.
3. Choose a service, or **User-Defined Service**, then the trigger protocol and port range.
4. Tick **Same as Initiating Port** and select **Save Changes**.

Triggered ports open only while needed and close when not in use.

**Kilobat can help.** Without UPnP traffic counters, Kilobat’s [call reports](https://kilobat.app/video-calls) still name a busy app on your Mac or a Wi-Fi problem, but can’t point at another device at home.

## Prioritise calls and gaming

Optimum documents no QoS or device priority setting for its Gateways.

**Kilobat can help.** Run Kilobat’s [stutter test](https://kilobat.app/guides/recipes/test-call-stutter) before and after you change priorities, to see whether calls really got smoother.

## 2.4 and 5 GHz, and the channel

Optimum’s help pages for its Gateways describe no way to split the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands or choose a channel. For Wi-Fi trouble, use **WiFi › Troubleshoot my Internet** in the app.

**Kilobat can help.** Kilobat shows which band and channel your Mac is on, and `kilobat channels` suggests the least crowded channel. More in [crowded Wi-Fi channels](https://kilobat.app/guides/wifi-channel-congestion) and [Wi-Fi on a Mac](https://kilobat.app/wifi-analyzer-mac).

## Mesh: which node a device uses

Optimum WiFi Extenders are set up yourself, in the My Optimum app.

1. Open the My Optimum app and sign in.
2. Tap **My account › set up Extender**, or **WiFi › More options › set up Extender**.
3. Follow the steps on screen.

**Kilobat can help.** When your Mac moves to another node or band, Kilobat’s Health says so, so a weaker node isn’t taken for a router problem. See [find a better Wi-Fi spot](https://kilobat.app/guides/recipes/find-better-wifi-spot).

## Guest network

Optimum’s current help pages describe no guest network on its Gateways; share your main Wi-Fi details instead. The `optimumwifi` hotspots you may see are Optimum’s public network for customers out of the home, not a guest network.

**Kilobat can help.** Kilobat can show a network as a QR code, so guests join with their phone’s camera: [share Wi-Fi with a QR code](https://kilobat.app/guides/recipes/share-wifi-qr-code).

## DNS settings

Optimum documents no DNS setting for its Gateways. Its network also has built-in security that shows a warning page before known dangerous sites; you can click **Continue anyway**.

**Kilobat can help.** Before you change DNS, [compare resolvers with Kilobat](https://kilobat.app/guides/recipes/pick-faster-dns) to see which answers fastest from your home.

## Connection status and logs

1. Check the Gateway’s front panel; it is online when **POWER**, **DS/US** and **ONLINE** are solid green.
2. In the My Optimum app, tap **WiFi › Troubleshoot my Internet** and follow the steps.
3. Tap **WiFi › More Options › Check my Internet speed to the Gateway** for a speed test.

The app’s test measures the speed delivered to the Gateway, so it can be higher than a test run over Wi-Fi on your phone or laptop.

**Kilobat can help.** When the line keeps dropping, Kilobat’s [provider report](https://kilobat.app/docs/health#report) lists outages, latency and speed tests against your plan, ready to send to your provider.

## Questions

**Where is my Optimum Wi-Fi password?**

The default one is on the Gateway’s label as the **Wi-Fi Pre-Shared Key**. If you changed it, see **My WiFi network** at optimum.net/mynetwork or the **WiFi** tab in the app.

**Is there a 192.168 admin page?**

Optimum’s help pages don’t describe one for its Gateways. You manage the Gateway online at optimum.net/mynetwork or in the My Optimum app, with your Optimum ID.

**How do I forward ports on Optimum?**

Sign in at optimum.net/mynetwork, select **Port forwarding** at the bottom of the page and **Manage**, then pick the device and enter the ports.

## See what your router can’t tell you

Kilobat is a Mac menu-bar app that watches the network from your side: which app is using it, whether the Wi-Fi, the router or the provider is slow, and why a call froze.
