## Short answer

Part of macOS. It handles Siri, Spotlight and Safari suggestions and Look Up, so it connects to Apple while you search or type.

Safe to block

Safe to block if you don't want web suggestions. Local Spotlight search keeps working. It's cleaner to turn suggestions off in settings.

Path

`/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/CoreParsec.framework/parsecd`

launchd label

`com.apple.parsecd`

Signing identifier

`com.apple.parsecd`

## What it is

The man page says that `parsecd` “manages access and data for Siri Suggestions, Spotlight Suggestions, Safari Suggestions, Lookup, #images, and Apple News article search”.

It is in the CoreParsec framework of macOS, and launchd starts it for each user as `com.apple.parsecd`.

Apple lists `*.smoot.apple.com` for search services, including Siri, Spotlight, Lookup, Safari, News, Messages and Music.

## Why it uses the network

- **Suggestions while you type.** Suggestions from the web need a request to Apple's servers.
- **Look Up and images.** Look Up and #images get their content from the internet.
- **Your approximate location.** Apple says that to deliver relevant search suggestions, it may use your IP address to approximate a region, even with Location Services off.

## How much is normal

Small requests while you search are usual.

It should be quiet when you don't search, type in Safari's address bar or use Look Up.

Images in suggestions and Look Up are larger than text results.

## When it uses a lot, and why

- **Many searches.** Each keystroke in Spotlight or Safari's address bar can bring new suggestions.
- **Images.** #images and Look Up results with pictures download those pictures.

## Is it safe to block?

Safe to block

Safe to block if you don't want web suggestions. Local Spotlight search keeps working. It's cleaner to turn suggestions off in settings.

What breaks if you block it

- Siri, Spotlight and Safari suggestions from the web stop appearing.
- Look Up and #images can't load their content.
- Apple News article search may stop working.

Blocking means a firewall rule that refuses its connections. Don’t quit or disable a macOS process to save data: macOS starts it again, and other features depend on it.

## Reduce its use

1. Choose Apple menu › System Settings › Spotlight. Turn off the search results and suggestions that you don't use.
2. In the same place, turn off Help Apple Improve Search if you don't want to share search queries.
3. In Safari, choose Safari › Settings › Search. Turn off the suggestions that you don't use.
4. Don't quit `parsecd` in Activity Monitor. macOS starts it again.

## See how much it uses

1. Open Activity Monitor from Applications › Utilities. Click Network.
2. Type `parsecd` in the search field. The Sent Bytes and Rcvd Bytes columns show what it moved since it started.
3. In Terminal, watch only this process. Press d to show the change per second, and q to quit.

   ```
   nettop -p 'parsecd' -P
   ```

## With Kilobat

1. In the Kilobat app list, search for `parsecd`. Its row shows the live rate and what it moved today.
2. In Connections, click the ⓘ button on one of its rows. The popover shows this page’s short answer, without going online.
3. In Terminal, ask the same question. Add `--json` for scripts and agents.

   ```
   kilobat explain 'parsecd'
   ```
4. Show its traffic over one day.

   ```
   kilobat bandwidth 'parsecd' day
   ```
5. Through MCP, an AI agent asks `explain_connection` with the process name. It gets the same facts.

The live view and the explanations are free. History in the app needs Kilobat Pro. Blocking needs Pro and the network filter: see the [network filter](https://kilobat.app/docs/blocking#filtering), [Protection](https://kilobat.app/docs/blocking#protection) and the [hotspot data saver](https://kilobat.app/save-hotspot-data).

## Hosts it contacts

Apple and the maker document these hosts for this feature. A process can also contact others; Kilobat’s Connections tab shows what it actually opens on your Mac.

- [*.smoot.apple.com](https://kilobat.app/hosts/smoot-apple-com): Apple's search services, for suggestions in Siri, Spotlight, Look Up, Safari, News, Messages and Music.

## What isn’t documented

Apple doesn't document what each suggestion request contains. The Spotlight and Safari settings describe what you can turn off.

## Questions
