# Icelandair Wi-Fi: What’s free, what it costs and how to connect

Icelandair has Wi-Fi from gate to gate on its Airbus A321 and Boeing 757, 767 and 737 aircraft. The A321LR and 737 MAX use Viasat and support streaming; the 757 and 767 are much slower.

Step by step

## How to connect to Icelandair Wi-Fi on a Mac

The steps are the same on every equipped aircraft, but the sign-in address differs. These are from Icelandair’s Wi-Fi page.

1. Put your device in flight mode, then turn on Wi-Fi.
2. Join the `Icelandair Internet Access` network.
3. On the A321LR or 737 MAX, open a browser and go to `icelandair.viasat.com`.
4. On the 757 or 767, go to `wifi.icelandairwifi.com` instead.
5. Connect to the internet through the Icelandair portal. Saga Club members can pay with Saga Points there.

Viasat’s terms for Icelandair forbid voice and video calls, online gaming, software updates and sharing your connection with another device.

The rules

## Streaming, calls and VPNs on Icelandair Wi-Fi

### Streaming and calls

Streaming: A321LR and 737 MAXCalls: Not allowed

On the A321LR and 737 MAX, Icelandair calls the Wi-Fi home-quality broadband that handles streaming. It says speed isn’t affected by how many people are online. On the 757 and 767 the speed is similar to 3G, and Icelandair says it isn’t ideal for streaming.

### VPNs

May be intermittent

Viasat’s terms for Icelandair say a VPN may be intermittent and need several logins, because of brief losses of connection. Icelandair doesn’t publish a VPN rule for the 757 and 767.

Aircraft

## Who provides Icelandair Wi-Fi, and which planes have it

- ### [Viasat](https://kilobat.app/in-flight-wifi/viasat)

  The provider runs: Geostationary satellite

  Airbus A321LR and Boeing 737 MAX. Icelandair’s Wi-Fi page sends these passengers to a Viasat sign-in page, and Viasat says it serves the whole 737 MAX fleet.

Icelandair lists Wi-Fi on its Airbus A321 and Boeing 757, 767 and 737 aircraft, from boarding until you leave the plane. There’s no Wi-Fi on domestic flights or flights to Greenland, because of the aircraft on those routes. Icelandair doesn’t name the provider on the 757 and 767.

## Make a slow, shared link go further

Kilobat is a Mac menu-bar app that shows what each app sends and holds back what can wait. On Icelandair Wi-Fi:

- **The sign-in page.** When it doesn’t open by itself, the menu bar says **This Wi-Fi wants you to sign in**, with **Open sign-in page**. Turn your VPN on after you’ve signed in.
- **Mark it metered.** macOS treats plane Wi-Fi as unlimited. Mark it **Metered** in Kilobat’s Wi-Fi & Bluetooth menu or with `kilobat networks cost metered`, and Kilobat skips its own speed tests. If automatic switching is enabled, it switches to Travel.
- **Updates wait.** With Pro, paused updaters enabled and the network filter on, macOS Software Update, App Store downloads, Google Updater and Microsoft AutoUpdate wait for an unmetered network. The apps keep working.
- **See what’s using it.** Every app’s upload and download, live in the menu bar, so a messaging-only plan isn’t spent on a sync you forgot.
- **Send later.** A big upload, such as Dropbox syncing a folder, shows as a row with its speed. With Pro, **Send later** can hold it until you’re on unmetered Wi-Fi again, for up to eight hours while Kilobat is open.
- **Know what’s slow.** Health shows latency and loss, and with Pro their history through the flight. Those measurements can help you investigate a slow connection. When Slack or Zoom won’t load, [Is it them or me?](https://kilobat.app/is-it-down) reads the service’s status page.

```
Kilobat is free to download and use. Pro adds the parts marked Pro, for $29 once for two Macs, with a 7-day free trial and 14-day refunds. More in [what to do before you board](https://kilobat.app/in-flight-wifi#before-you-board).
**What is eating your bandwidth?** Live traffic for every app, right in your menu bar. Catch the backup choking your call.
**Hotspot data gone in an hour?** Travel blocks backups, and updaters wait until you’re off the hotspot. The apps keep working.
## Questions
**Is Icelandair Wi-Fi free?**
Only for Saga Premium and Saga Premium Flex passengers and Saga Gold members, on two devices each. Economy passengers pay €6 to €24, depending on the aircraft and route.
**Can you stream on Icelandair Wi-Fi?**
Yes on the Airbus A321LR and Boeing 737 MAX, which use Viasat. The 757 and 767 are about as fast as 3G, which Icelandair says isn’t ideal for streaming.
**What is the Icelandair Wi-Fi network called?**
Icelandair names its Wi-Fi network `Icelandair Internet Access`. Join it, then sign in on the page that opens.
**Can you use a VPN on Icelandair Wi-Fi?**
Viasat’s terms for Icelandair say a VPN may be intermittent and need several logins, because of brief losses of connection. Icelandair doesn’t publish a VPN rule for the 757 and 767.
**Why won’t the Icelandair Wi-Fi sign-in page open on my Mac?**
A VPN, iCloud Private Relay or your own DNS can keep the page from opening. Turn them off, open `http://captive.apple.com` in Safari, and turn the VPN on again after you’ve signed in. Kilobat shows **Open sign-in page** when a network is waiting for you.
