Step by step

## How to connect to China Airlines Wi-Fi on a Mac

From China Airlines’ Wi-Fi page and its guides for each aircraft.

1. Turn on airplane mode, then turn on Wi-Fi and join `Wi-Fi Onboard`.
2. On the 777 or A350, open a browser. If the portal doesn’t appear, go to `cal-wifi.com`.
3. On the A321neo, the portal is `onboard.abu.inmarsat.com`.
4. For a free plan, choose the complimentary option and follow the verification steps on screen.
5. Enter your email address to start browsing or messaging. Or buy a plan by card.

On the 777 and A350, China Airlines suggests turning off Safari’s **Not Secure Connection Warning** and **Block Pop-ups** if sign-in fails. For problems with a paid plan, China Airlines sends you to the provider for your aircraft. For Viasat, that’s `passenger.care@inmarsat.com`.

The rules

## Streaming, calls and VPNs on China Airlines Wi-Fi

Aircraft

## Who provides China Airlines Wi-Fi, and which planes have it

- ### [Panasonic Avionics](https://kilobat.app/in-flight-wifi/panasonic-avionics)

  The provider runs: Geostationary satellite · Low-orbit satellite

  Boeing 777 and Airbus A350, apart from the A350 flights to Amsterdam and Singapore.
- ### [Viasat](https://kilobat.app/in-flight-wifi/viasat)

  The provider runs: Geostationary satellite

  Airbus A321neo, and the A350 on the Amsterdam (CI73/CI74) and Singapore (CI753/CI754) routes.

Wi-Fi is on China Airlines’ Boeing 777, Airbus A350 and A321neo aircraft, but not on certain A350 and A321neo flights. On codeshare flights run by another airline, that airline’s rules apply. China Airlines asks you to keep Wi-Fi off until the aircraft is above 10,000 feet. Its 777 and A350 guide says service drops over the Arctic and Antarctic, for up to 3.5 hours.

## Make a slow, shared link go further

Kilobat is a Mac menu-bar app that shows what each app sends and holds back what can wait. On China Airlines Wi-Fi:

- **The sign-in page.** When it doesn’t open by itself, the menu bar says **This Wi-Fi wants you to sign in**, with **Open sign-in page**. Turn your VPN on after you’ve signed in.
- **Mark it metered.** macOS treats plane Wi-Fi as unlimited. Mark it **Metered** in Kilobat’s Wi-Fi & Bluetooth menu or with `kilobat networks cost metered`, and Kilobat skips its own speed tests. If automatic switching is enabled, it switches to Travel.
- **Updates wait.** With Pro, paused updaters enabled and the network filter on, macOS Software Update, App Store downloads, Google Updater and Microsoft AutoUpdate wait for an unmetered network. The apps keep working.
- **See what’s using it.** Every app’s upload and download, live in the menu bar, so a messaging-only plan isn’t spent on a sync you forgot.
- **Send later.** A big upload, such as Dropbox syncing a folder, shows as a row with its speed. With Pro, **Send later** can hold it until you’re on unmetered Wi-Fi again, for up to eight hours while Kilobat is open.
- **Know what’s slow.** Health shows latency and loss, and with Pro their history through the flight. Those measurements can help you investigate a slow connection. When Slack or Zoom won’t load, [Is it them or me?](https://kilobat.app/is-it-down) reads the service’s status page.

```
Kilobat is free to download and use. Pro adds the parts marked Pro, for $29 once for two Macs, with a 7-day free trial and 14-day refunds. More in [what to do before you board](https://kilobat.app/in-flight-wifi#before-you-board).
**What is eating your bandwidth?** Live traffic for every app, right in your menu bar. Catch the backup choking your call.
**Hotspot data gone in an hour?** Travel blocks backups, and updaters wait until you’re off the hotspot. The apps keep working.
## Questions
**Is China Airlines Wi-Fi free?**
Messaging is free for everyone on equipped flights. Unlimited browsing is free in Premium Business and Premium Economy, and for Paragon, Emerald and Gold members.
**Can I make calls on China Airlines Wi-Fi?**
**What is the China Airlines Wi-Fi network called?**
China Airlines names its Wi-Fi network `Wi-Fi Onboard`. Join it, then sign in on the page that opens.
**Can you stream on China Airlines Wi-Fi?**
China Airlines advises against streaming such as Netflix or YouTube and large file transfers. It says the Wi-Fi isn’t suitable for software updates, cloud access, SMS or MMS.
**Can you use a VPN on China Airlines Wi-Fi?**
China Airlines doesn’t publish a VPN rule.
**Why won’t the China Airlines Wi-Fi sign-in page open on my Mac?**
A VPN, iCloud Private Relay or your own DNS can keep the page from opening. Turn them off, open `http://captive.apple.com` in Safari, and turn the VPN on again after you’ve signed in. Kilobat shows **Open sign-in page** when a network is waiting for you.
