# Telstra hotspot limits

**Checked 1 November 2026** against Telstra’s own pages. Plans change: your plan’s terms win.

On Telstra’s Upfront Mobile Light plan, hotspot use has a small limit within your monthly data allowance. Go over your data or hotspot allowance and Telstra doesn’t charge more; it slows you to 1.5 Mbps or below.

Hotspot data

On the Light plan, hotspot up to 200 MB within the data allowance; check other plans’ summaries.

After it

1.5 Mbps or below, slowed further at busy times.

Video

Telstra says 1.5 Mbps isn’t suitable for HD video.

The My Telstra app.

## Hotspot allowance

- On the Upfront Mobile Light plan, you can hotspot up to 200 MB within your data allowance; Telstra’s summary says this limit applies from November.
- Telstra’s linked Upfront Mobile plan summary describes older plans closed to new connections in July 2022. Other plans may have different terms; check your own plan summary.
- Telstra’s FairPlay Policy applies, and the data allowance is for personal use.

## Speed after the allowance

- You aren’t charged for going over your monthly data or hotspot allowance. Instead, data or hotspot is slowed to 1.5 Mbps or below.
- For the older Upfront Mobile plans in the linked summary, Telstra says speeds may slow further in busy periods.
- You get alerts at 50%, 85% and 100% of your data, and at 100% of hotspot use.

## Plans without hotspot

- On the Light plan, hotspot is limited to 200 MB, so a laptop will use it up quickly.

## Video

- Telstra says the slowed speed isn’t suitable for HD video or high-speed applications.

## Check what’s left

1. Open the My Telstra app and look at your data and hotspot usage.
2. Watch for Telstra’s alerts at 50%, 85% and 100% of data and at 100% of hotspot use.

## What Kilobat can tell you

If every speed test and big download on your hotspot stops near the same speed, such as the 1.5 Mbps Telstra publishes, on different occasions while the ping stays normal, Health says it looks like Telstra’s hotspot cap. A weak signal or a busy cell wanders instead, and Kilobat says nothing then. It also notices video held near 1.5 Mbps while other downloads run faster. It can’t see your allowance or tell a hotspot cap from a plan that caps everything: check on the phone too.

It’s free in Health on any phone hotspot, with the measurements behind it in Kilobat Pro, and in the terminal with `kilobat hotspot`. More in [the docs](https://kilobat.app/docs/usage#hotspot-throttling) and [saving hotspot data](https://kilobat.app/save-hotspot-data).

Checked against Telstra’s own plan pages, terms and help articles on 1 November 2026. Allowances and speeds differ by plan and change often; what your own plan says wins.

## See what your hotspot is really doing

Kilobat is a Mac menu-bar app that shows which apps use your hotspot’s data, holds back updaters on metered networks, and says when downloads keep stopping at the same speed.
