# registry.npmjs.org

`registry.npmjs.org` is the npm public registry. The npm documentation says that npm uses it by default, unless you configure another registry.

`registry.npmjs.org`

A name with `*.` covers every name under it: `*.push.apple.com` matches `1-courier.push.apple.com`.

## What it serves

The npm documentation says that npm is configured to use the public registry at `https://registry.npmjs.org` by default.

A package's scope can point it to another registry, and the `registry` setting changes the default.

On a Mac, npm runs on [`node`](https://kilobat.app/processes/node), so package downloads show under `node`.

## What breaks if you block it

Block with care

Blocking it stops npm and npx from installing public packages, unless you use another registry.

What breaks if you block it

- `npm install` and `npx` can't download public packages.
- AI agents and tools that install npm packages fail.
