# How much data does YouTube use on a Mac?

YouTube data use depends on what you do and the settings you choose. Check a real session before relying on an estimate.

Applies to: Mac computers; app settings and features can change with app versions. · Checked: 2 November 2026

## When to check

- You want to use YouTube on a hotspot or limited connection.
- The data allowance is falling faster than expected.

## How much data it uses

- **What the provider says.** YouTube adjusts video quality to viewing conditions. It does not publish one fixed data amount per hour for all videos.
- **Recommended connection speed.** YouTube recommends 0.7 Mbps for 360p, 2.5 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p and 20 Mbps for 4K. These are connection speeds, not measured data use.
- **Why your total differs.** The video, quality, format and viewing time affect the amount transferred.

## Measure a session

1. Open Activity Monitor, choose Network, and find the browser used for YouTube.
2. Note Sent Bytes and Rcvd Bytes before and after a session. Add their changes for a rough total.
3. Activity Monitor counts processes, not individual browser tabs. Other activity in the same browser affects the result.
4. A process restart resets its counters. A service can also use helper processes that need separate checks.

## Reduce data use

1. In the YouTube player, select Settings, then Quality. Choose a lower available quality.
2. Use a short test on the same connection to compare before and after.

## With Kilobat

1. Open Kilobat to see traffic for apps on this Mac. Browser activity appears under the browser.
2. See [which app uses bandwidth](https://kilobat.app/guides/which-app-uses-bandwidth) and [background hotspot data](https://kilobat.app/guides/hotspot-background-data).

## Questions

**Is there a fixed YouTube data cost per hour?**

No. Settings and activity change the amount. Provider figures are estimates or rates, not your carrier bill.

**Does a Mac show all hotspot traffic?**

No. Other devices and the phone can also use the allowance. Compare with the carrier total.
