# Valheim server connection on Mac: crossplay, ports and lag

Valheim servers can use Steam or the crossplay backend. Ask the host which one is in use before changing settings.

Applies to: Valheim on Mac and dedicated servers. Server and game versions must be compatible. · Checked: 2 November 2026

## Symptoms

- A friend’s server is missing from the list.
- The client cannot join a server.
- Players or world updates appear late.

## Likely causes

- **Different server settings or versions.** A server can use the Steam backend or the crossplay backend and may be hidden from the public list.
- **Host network or service restrictions.** The host’s server configuration and network determine whether players can reach it.
- **A local or internet path problem.** Wi-Fi interference or congestion can affect the connection to the host.

## Check the server and backend

1. Ask the host to confirm the server is running and provide the correct joining details.
2. Check that the game and server versions are compatible.
3. A Steam-backend dedicated server uses port 2456 and the next port by default. The host can select another port.
4. The crossplay backend uses a relay. Its dedicated-server guide says it does not require port forwarding.
5. For a crossplay server, use the join code, public address and port, or the server list.
6. The guide says crossplay servers cannot be joined using a local or loopback address.
7. Compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi. Check [Test for packet loss on a Mac with ping](https://kilobat.app/guides/packet-loss-mac) if the connection is unstable.

## How to fix it

1. For a hidden server, ask the host for the intended connection method.
2. If the Steam-backend host cannot receive connections, ask the host to consult the dedicated-server guide.
3. Do not forward server ports on every player’s router. Hosting and joining are different jobs.
4. Pause large transfers and test again. If Wi-Fi is weaker than Ethernet, see [Weak Wi-Fi signal on a Mac](https://kilobat.app/guides/weak-wifi-signal-mac).

## With Kilobat

1. Try identifying the active game connection during play. macOS may not expose its address.

   ```
   kilobat games --match
   ```
2. Some servers and relays do not answer ping. A missing reply does not prove loss.
3. Compare general router and internet measurements.

   ```
   kilobat diagnose
   ```

## Questions

**Which region hosts a Valheim server?**

A dedicated server is run by its host. Ask the host about its location and the backend in use.

**Does crossplay need port forwarding?**

The dedicated-server guide says the crossplay backend uses a relay and does not require port forwarding.

**Does Valheim require a specific NAT type?**

The cited server guide does not specify one NAT type for all players.

**Does Steam download region select the Valheim server?**

Steam’s download region chooses content servers. The game server is selected separately.
