# Steam connection problems on Mac: checks for downloads and games

A Steam connection problem can come from the service, your network or software on the Mac. Check the service first.

## Symptoms

- Steam cannot connect.
- A download stalls or a game cannot reach its service.

## Likely causes

- **A service outage.** Steam or an individual game service may be unavailable.
- **A local connection or restriction.** Wi-Fi interference, firewall rules or a managed network can interrupt traffic.

## How to check

1. Check Steam service status and the affected game’s status.
2. Compare the same network over Ethernet if possible.

4. On a managed network, ask its administrator about restrictions.

## How to fix it

1. Pause other large downloads and retry.
2. Review firewall and security software rules using the vendor’s instructions.
