# Safari: “You Are Not Connected to the Internet” on Mac

Safari shows this page when macOS has no internet connection for it. Often Wi-Fi is off, the Mac has no address, or a VPN holds traffic.

Applies to: Safari on macOS 13 Ventura and later. The text was checked on macOS 27.2. · Checked: 29 October 2026

## Symptoms

- Safari shows the heading “You Are Not Connected to the Internet”.
- Other apps also say that they are offline.
- Wi-Fi shows as connected, but nothing loads.

## Likely causes

- **Wi-Fi is off or not joined.** The Mac is not on any network.
- **No valid IP address.** The Mac did not get an address from the router. See [Mac has a self-assigned IP address](https://kilobat.app/guides/self-assigned-ip-address.html).
- **The router or the provider has no internet.** If other devices also fail, the problem is not the Mac.
- **A VPN that blocks traffic.** Some VPNs block all traffic while they connect or after they disconnect.
- **Another network service comes first.** An Ethernet adapter or a tethered phone with no internet can be first in the service order. See [Mac uses the wrong network connection](https://kilobat.app/guides/network-service-order.html).

## How to check

1. Click the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar. Make sure that Wi-Fi is on and that the Mac joined your network.
2. Show the address, router and subnet of the Wi-Fi service.

   ```
   networksetup -getinfo Wi-Fi
   ```
3. Show the network state that apps see. Each interface says if it is reachable.

   ```
   scutil --nwi
   ```
4. Find the router address in the `gateway` line. Then ping it.

   ```
   route -n get default
   ping -c 5 192.168.1.1
   ```
5. Ping an address on the internet. This test does not use DNS.

   ```
   ping -c 5 1.1.1.1
   ```

## How to fix it

1. Turn Wi-Fi off and on in the Wi-Fi menu, or join your network again.
2. If the address starts with 169.254, renew the DHCP lease. See [Renew the DHCP lease on a Mac](https://kilobat.app/guides/renew-dhcp-lease-mac.html).
3. Restart the router if other devices also fail.
4. Disconnect the VPN, or quit it, for a test.
5. If the problem continues, use Wireless Diagnostics. See [Use Wireless Diagnostics and wdutil on a Mac](https://kilobat.app/guides/wireless-diagnostics-mac.html).

## With Kilobat

1. Check Wi-Fi, the router, the internet, DNS and a login page in one command.

   ```
   kilobat diagnose
   ```
2. Show when the Mac lost the connection while the app ran.

   ```
   kilobat outages
   ```
3. These Kilobat checks are free. AI agents run them through MCP with `diagnose_connection` and `diagnose_network`. See [Find why one site or API won't connect](https://kilobat.app/guides/recipes/why-cant-it-connect.html).

## Questions

**Why does Safari say this when Wi-Fi has full bars?**

Full bars show a good link to the router. The router, the address or a VPN can still stop internet access. See [Mac connected to Wi-Fi but no internet](https://kilobat.app/guides/wifi-connected-no-internet.html).
