# How much data does iCloud Photos use on a Mac?

iCloud Photos data use depends on what you do and the settings you choose. Check a real session before relying on an estimate.

Applies to: Mac computers; app settings and features can change with app versions. · Checked: 2 November 2026

## When to check

- You want to use iCloud Photos on a hotspot or limited connection.
- The data allowance is falling faster than expected.

## How much data it uses

- **What the provider says.** Apple says the time required to upload a library depends on its size and internet speed. There is no fixed hourly amount for each library.
- **Why your total differs.** New photos, videos, edits and downloads affect the amount transferred.

## Measure a session

1. Open Activity Monitor and choose Network. Sort by Sent Bytes or Rcvd Bytes.
2. Compare the counters before and after the task. System services can share work across processes.
3. Check the carrier total separately. It can include traffic from other devices.

## Reduce data use

1. In Photos, select Library, then All Photos. Scroll down and click Pause if available.
2. Use a short test on the same connection to compare before and after.

## With Kilobat

1. Open Kilobat to see traffic for apps and processes on this Mac. System work can appear under a helper process.
2. See [which app uses bandwidth](https://kilobat.app/guides/which-app-uses-bandwidth) and [background hotspot data](https://kilobat.app/guides/hotspot-background-data).

## Questions

**Is there a fixed iCloud Photos data cost per hour?**

No. Settings and activity change the amount. Provider figures are estimates or rates, not your carrier bill.

**Does a Mac show all hotspot traffic?**

No. Other devices and the phone can also use the allowance. Compare with the carrier total.
