# Hotel Wi-Fi on a Mac: sign-ins, device limits and lag

Most hotel Wi-Fi problems on a Mac come from the sign-in, a limit on devices or a busy network. Each one needs a different fix.

Applies to: All current macOS versions. The Off, Fixed and Rotating options for the private Wi-Fi address are in macOS 15 Sequoia and later. · Checked: 29 October 2026

## Symptoms

- The sign-in page asks for a room number, a surname or an access code, and does not accept it.
- The page says that you have too many devices.
- The Mac is online, then loses the internet after an hour or a day.
- The Wi-Fi shows full bars, but pages and calls lag, mostly in the evening.

## Likely causes

- **The sign-in expired.** Many hotel networks give each sign-in a set time. After that, the network holds all traffic until you sign in again.
- **A limit on devices.** Some hotels allow only a small number of devices for each room or code. Each phone, tablet and laptop counts.
- **A new private Wi-Fi address.** With Rotating, or after you forget the network, the Mac can look like a new device. It then takes a new slot.
- **A shared, busy connection.** All guests share the hotel's internet connection. In the evening, many guests stream video at the same time.
- **A weak signal in the room.** The access point can be in the corridor, behind walls. The Mac can then drop to 2.4 GHz or a low link rate.

## How to check

1. In a browser, open http://captive.apple.com. If the hotel's page opens, the network wants a sign-in.
2. Choose Apple menu > System Settings > Wi-Fi. Click Details next to the hotel network.
3. Read the value of Private Wi-Fi address.
4. Hold the Option key and click the Wi-Fi icon. Write down the band, channel and signal.
5. Run Apple's speed test. Run it again at another time of day, and compare.

   ```
   networkQuality
   ```
6. See which processes use the network now. Press q to stop.

   ```
   nettop -P -d
   ```

## How to fix it

1. Type the room number and the surname as the booking shows them. Ask the front desk if the page refuses them.
2. Set Private Wi-Fi address to Fixed for the hotel network. The Mac then keeps one address for the stay.
3. Do not forget the hotel network during your stay. Forgetting it can give the Mac a new address.
4. If the page says that you have too many devices, sign out a device that you do not need online.
5. If the page has no sign-out, ask the front desk to reset the devices for your room.
6. For lag, move the Mac nearer to the door or the access point. Then test again.
7. If the room has an Ethernet port, connect the Mac with an adapter and a cable.
8. Pause sync and backups before a call. They share the same slow connection.
9. If the hotel Wi-Fi is too slow for a call, use your phone's Personal Hotspot for the call.

## With Kilobat

1. Find which part is slow: Wi-Fi, the router, the internet, DNS or the sign-in page.

   ```
   kilobat diagnose
   ```
2. Check the sign-in page, and whether the network logged you out after an earlier sign-in.

   ```
   kilobat portal
   ```

   Output When a sign-in page is in the way, it prints its address. `kilobat portal open` opens it in your browser.
3. Kilobat learns how long sign-ins last on each network. Kilobat Pro warns you about five minutes before the next logout.
4. Walk around the room with the Mac and follow the signal score. Press q to stop.

   ```
   kilobat radar --watch
   ```
5. In the app, Signal radar is part of Kilobat Pro. The CLI is free. See [Find a better Wi-Fi spot](https://kilobat.app/guides/recipes/find-better-wifi-spot).
6. Before a call, run a stutter test. It finds spikes that repeat.

   ```
   kilobat stutter
   ```
7. For more about sign-ins, see [Hotel Wi-Fi sign-ins on a Mac](https://kilobat.app/hotel-wifi-login-mac).

## Questions

**Why does the hotel Wi-Fi keep asking me to sign in?**

Each sign-in can last a set time. A new private address can also look like a new device to the network.

**Is Fixed less private than Rotating?**

Fixed keeps one address on this network only. Other networks still see a different address. The hotel can link your visits on its own network.

**Can the hotel see what I do online?**

Pages with https hide their contents from the network. The network can still see which servers you connect to. Turn on a VPN after you sign in.
