# Final Fantasy XIV lag on Mac: data centres and connection checks

Final Fantasy XIV can lag when the route to its data centre is unstable. Check World status and the local connection first.

Applies to: The Mac version of Final Fantasy XIV. Check Square Enix’s current Mac requirements. · Checked: 2 November 2026

## Symptoms

- The game disconnects from a World.
- Actions are delayed or players jump.
- The game fails to connect or update.

## Likely causes

- **World maintenance or an incident.** A World or its data centre may be offline for maintenance.
- **A local or upstream path problem.** Wi-Fi interference, traffic on the network or the route to the data centre can cause delay.
- **Mac performance.** A slow frame rate can resemble network lag. Compare it with network symptoms.

## Check the World and connection

1. Find your World on Square Enix’s Server Status page. Check maintenance notices for the relevant data centre.
2. Physical data centres are in Japan, North America, Europe and Oceania. Distance can affect latency.
3. Compare Wi-Fi and Ethernet if possible. Note the time and whether other players see the same issue.
4. Test loss to your router and an internet target separately. See [Test for packet loss on a Mac with ping](https://kilobat.app/guides/packet-loss-mac).
5. Square Enix lists TCP 80, 443, 54992–54994, 55006–55007 and 55021–55040 as ports the Mac version may use.
6. On a managed network, give the current requirements to its administrator. Do not assume a port forward is required.

## How to fix it

1. Pause large transfers and repeat the test.
2. If Ethernet improves the result, inspect Wi-Fi signal and interference. See [Weak Wi-Fi signal on a Mac](https://kilobat.app/guides/weak-wifi-signal-mac).
3. If the World is down, wait for the publisher’s update.
4. For persistent packet loss, use Square Enix’s report form and contact your provider with the results.

## With Kilobat

1. Try finding the active game connection. macOS may not expose the server address.

   ```
   kilobat games --match
   ```
2. Some servers do not answer ping; a missing reply does not prove the game lost packets.
3. Compare the general router and internet path.

   ```
   kilobat diagnose
   ```

## Questions

**Can I move a character to a nearer data centre?**

Data Centre Travel has availability and restrictions. Check Square Enix’s current travel guide before planning a move.

**Which NAT type does the Mac version require?**

The cited Mac requirements list ports but do not specify a required NAT type.

**Should I forward all listed ports?**

First identify a restriction. The list describes ports that may be used, not a reason to expose every port.

**Is every delay a network fault?**

No. A busy World, a local performance problem or a network path can produce similar symptoms.
